Rules I have for my kids to prevent cavities 1. No one kisses my kids on the mouth - bacteria is transferred and can alter a kids microbiome 2. No sharing drinks or utensils-same as number 1, cavities are a transmissible disease and I won’t let anyone introduce their bad bacteria to my kids mouths 3. Water between meals- teeth need time to recover, drinking other beverages between meals keeps the mouth acidic 4. No gummy vitamins - they stick in the grooves of teeth really badly and they are full of added sugars 5. No crackers - considered the highest cavity causing food, simple carbs feed bad bacteria for extended amounts of time 6. Brush and floss twice daily- 2x, every day! To break up plaque and remove what’s hiding between the teeth 7. No hard candies - stick to the teeth and stay in the mouth for too long 8. No going to bed with bottles of milk or formula - our saliva remineralizes our teeth overnight, everything needs to be removed prior to bedtime to maximize this recovery 9. Sweets are a special occasion thing, not a daily thing - frequency is more harmful than quantity, so we limit it Hi I’m Anna, a Registered dental hygienist with 10 years clinical experience and mom of 2. 1. Baby teeth act as place holders for the permanent teeth 2. Major decay in baby teeth can lead to infections that damage the permanent teeth developing underneath 3. Baby teeth help guide jaw and facial bone development 4. The average person looses their last baby tooth as a teenager, but I’ve seen people in their 70s with them 5. The enamel layer on baby teeth is thinner making them more susceptible to decay (and the decay progresses very quickly) 6. Baby teeth play a vital role in speech development and building early self esteem 7. They may be called “practice teeth” but they are just as important as the permanent ones. Take good care of them!! Top three places I always find old plaque on kids as a dental hygienist with 10+ years of clinical experience! 1. Cheek side of the top molars - tip: have kids close more so the cheek is looser and the tooth brush fits better on the outside! 2. Front teeth along the gums - tip: make sure the lip is pushed out of the way to get this area! 3. Tongue side of the bottom molars - tip: two different ways to brush the bottom ones to get around that tongue 😜 SAVE this fore later and SHARE with a fellow mom! #dental #kidsdentalcare #dentalhygienetips #dentalhygiene #parentingtips by @annashanerrdh

Using too much toothpaste is very common. Truth is you need very little to be effective (especially if you’re using Fluoride). Gentle vibrations, soft bristles, 2 minute timer with 30 second intervals, ergonomic handle for both parents and little hands, suction bottom to stand it up, realistic price point, but the seller for me is that the head lights up making it a mini flashlight in a child’s mouth so you can actually see what you’re doing! As a dental hygienist and mom of 2 this is my absolute favorite toddler tooth brush! It’s the one my kids use and my top recommendation for patents and family members! It also makes a great stocking stuffer! COMMENT BRUSH and I’ll send the link your way! #dental #kidsdentalcare #parentingtips #healthykids #dentalhygiene by @annashanerrdh

At the dentist they say “sugar bugs” at home we say “nooth grushes” 🪥 My son is three and has been loving this for over a year now. Brushing teeth is a silly little adventure to remove all the nooth grushes from the teeth and tongue! Some of them jump around the teeth so we have to go fast to catch them and sometimes they are slow, sometimes there’s a whole “family” of them and others it’s one stubborn one. It gives little kids a good visual representation that something is there and they love the silliness to it! Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try this out! #dental #kidsdentalcare #parentingtips #healthykids #dentalhygiene by @annashanerrdh
