@peterdoig keeps stopping me — not all of his work, specific paintings. Grande rivière (2001-2002) is one of them. The atmosphere, the way paint moves, night that isn't quite night. Can't be bothered with the copyright so I made my own response instead. Twenty minutes in a sketchbook trying to understand what his colours are doing. A first experiment with wire as structure — something to wind around, to build from. The form arrived somewhere between a basket, a birdcage and a jellyfish. Rust-coloured yarn against dark wire. I wasn't sure what it wanted to hold. Maybe nothing. Maybe that was the point.

Reading Edmund de Waal's The Hare with the Amber Eyes. At the heart of the story is a single object — a tiny ivory netsuke, passed down through a family across continents and a century of upheaval. De Waal traces provenance not just of things, but of feeling. The writing is beautiful — the Paris interiors, the social gatherings, the world rendered in precise and luminous detail. One of those books that stays with you long after you've finished.
