Y’all, I miss having summer vacation. I just wanna go away for a few days to hang out and do some crafty stuff with my friends. I called @anne.choi of Middle Brook Fiberworks to help put together a fun weekend. Of course you know I had to turn it into a retreat. A bonafide summer camp experience, but elevated. We’ll be weaving our friendship bracelets on an inkle loom and eating delicious meals made from fresh, local ingredients. We’ll do ice dyeing and potholder weaving plus optional foraging for elements to add to our eco printing experience. Also, we’ll learn how to weave botanical and found elements into a freeform tapestry. Finally, we’ll learn bojagi, traditional Korean fabric upcycling. And rest. I promise we’ll rest. My favorite way to test out a new-to-me natural dye is to print with it, and I'm usually more interested in printing with leaves than the petals. This is 봉숭아 (impatiens balsamina), one of the seedlings I'm most excited to share this year. It was used historically in Korea as a proto-nail polish! I was reading about the process of making a paste of the petals with alum and applying that to nails, and well. We know what comes next. Keratin + mineral salt = natural dye. The flowers come in a mix of pinks, purples , and corals. If you want your own 봉숭아 to print with or dye with, I'll have a few for the Barn Crawl this weekend. 🌱 by @anne.choi

Grab your boots 🐑 Bring a friend 🌱 Pack a project to work on 🧶

Come meet the flock and other local farm fiber friends this weekend for the @nj_fibershed Barn Crawl! I've invited @oneanotherfibermill, along with a local woodturner who'll have handmade spindles. On Sunday I'll be joined by Hardscrabble Farm with her Shetland fleeces and Pine Hill Farm with her cashmere yarn. And. a special baby goat guest!

Spinning and weaving demos from local guilds and @fiberbynature throughout the weekend, and there will be looms and wheels set up to try.

Exciting mill drop meetup today at NJ sheep & wool! First time having roving made instead of yarn and the fiber is immaculate ✨ Blend is 80% Shetland 12% ramie 8% tussah silk. Putting all my other projects on hold to maybe make something in time for Rhinebeck? Thank you Laura @oneanotherfibermill!
