LIGHTS ON

Infrastructure Bodies/Injury Systems on view now through May 22nd with @wudart and @chazenartuw

In four channels of FOIA street camera footage and eight channels of paired pixel-synthesized audio, the project explores surveillance practices on the American street in the age of artificial intelligence. The voice recording featured in the exhibition is made up from those injured in protest in Minneapolis, Chicago, Madison and Indianapolis.

"By transforming surveillance footage into sound and amplifying the voices of those injured or disabled through protest, [Stoner] reclaims tools often used to erase accountability. Layered voices form a collective presence—one that resists isolation and insists on shared experience. Her work reminds us that even in a hyper-monitored world, connection is still possible, and that listening carefully to one another can open space for dignity, care, and collective imagination." - @tylerblackwell

The Power, The Shiver, The Anthropocene

“The smell of money” reeks in the air of the Houston Ship Channel, the second largest petrochemical complex in the world. Many residents recognize the smell not as that of money, but as that of oil, gas, and air pollution. The Houston Ship Channel, an oil and gas metroplex stretching from Baytown to Galveston, makes Houston one of the most polluted cities in the United States, while simultaneously making the most money per capita from oil and gas. Billboards for personal injury lawyers stretch across the multi-lane highways. Residents spend their lives drilling for oil to feed the international reliance on petrochemical resources, a reliance that not only fuels the modern descent into climate change, but also caused a catastrophic energy crisis across the state.

As we disable our environment, we disable ourselves.

Installation view (Joan), Elevator Music 52: Anne E. Stoner—Drowning out the Noise, 2021-2025, Tang Museum, photograph by Mindy McDaniel

Soundscape, length 01:59:22; eight interviews, lengths variable (1:33–3:57)

What are you listening to?

For two years, sound artist and social ethnographer Anne E. Stoner asked queer strangers what music they listened to in their headphones while walking in Chicago and Edinburgh. Their conversations—recorded while walking together with Stoner through their neighborhoods—form the basis of Stoner’s project Drowning Out the Noise, which explores how listening to music plays a role in the performance of one’s identity in public.

Elevator Music 52: Anne E. Stoner—Drowning Out the Noise presents a layered soundscape of the music her interviewees listen to on overhead speakers while excerpts of their interviews—complete with interrupting city traffic—are only audible in headphones. Stoner recorded each interview using microphones worn over the interviewee’s ears, thus capturing the sound from that person’s unique position. We quite literally hear each person as they hear themselves.

Another fun piece of news - this year, I was so lucky to join the UNPOP install at @burningman. My piece “The Power, The Shiver, The Anthropocene” with @ash.mccu was played in Black Rock Desert alongside 160 other octophonic pieces of sound art and experimental music.

I can’t thank Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood enough for their dedication to this project, a bucket list moment I never knew I had taken in Burning Man Project by @anneestoner

“When I look to the future, I hear it hum.” - 13:46 additive synthesis audio work for the 32-speaker, forested Audio Trail at @iparkct. Recorded live in Max MSP from a collection of international, open source field recordings.

When I arrived at I-Park, I had absolutely no idea they had 32 speakers installed on their beautiful grounds! What a gift!!

You are warmly invited to Sound Art Meet-up #2 — an online gathering with short artist presentations and time for conversation. This time with Anne Stoner, Benjamin Meamo III, AIRE Collective.

Anne Stoner will present about her exhibition that was up from April 10th-May 22nd entitled “Infrastructure Bodies/Injury Systems.” The exhibition and project collected CCTV footage from American Midwest cities of protests and ICE agents, and data-sonified the movement of these bodies into synthesized sound and vocal keyboard. She would also like to ask for feedback on two very early stage projects: An edited book entitled “Sound at the End of the World,” and an upcoming 32-channel multichannel work for a Connecticut forest.

Benjamin Meamo III wishes to share his contribution in the Almanac focusing on his extended/expanded work on the soundscapes of Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJs) Baguio given that jeeps are under imminent danger posed by the Jeepney Phaseout - Modernization Scheme of the Philippine Government, as well as the economic hardships caused by Oil Deregulation Law (1998) vis-a-vis the oil price hike (US-Iran war 2026)

AIRE Collective (Yasya Minenkova, Yanis Proshkinas, and Denis Bykovskiy) will present “Post-Covid Blues: Coughscape” (2025), a site-responsive sound intervention developed at the Ūmėdė Festival in Vilnius from the dialogical essay “Post-Covid blues” by Yasya Minenkova and Yanis Proshkinas. A dispersed speaker array emitting cough sounds formed a “coughscape,” inviting close listening and attentiveness to the presence of the Other. The work reflects on how the pandemic recoded bodily sounds into biopolitical markers, prompting audiences to register their own affective responses — distance, vigilance, and responsiveness.

SOUND ON
(FEAT. ULTRASONIC FEEDBACK)

Infrastructure Bodies/Injury Systems

Eight channels of data-sonified audio, four channels of datamoshed FOIA surveillance video, all surrounding a central, 450lb. steel structure

"With a UW Police Department Flock Safety camera surveilling outside the Memorial Union, it feels fitting that inside, the installation “Infrastructure Bodies/Injury Systems” asks what it means to be seen — and recorded. Anne E. Stoner, the 2026 Russell and Paula Panczenko MFA Prize winner, pairs surveillance footage from recent Midwest protests with a sonic illustration of the movement of people in the video, along with audio of people injured during demonstrations. The work is a response to the current federal administration’s approach to law enforcement in American cities, and promises to be a sobering experience." - @isthmusmadison by @anneestoner
