Opening Tuesday next week (6/10) is a painting and poetry exhibition 'Theory of Everything' by 2026 Writing resident @annekewestraa_ and poet @jrtmccarthy
Come and celebrate this exciting exhibition and keep your eyes peeled as we will be announcing an exciting event to accompany!
____________
Theory of Memory brings together new poems by Jackson McCarthy and new paintings by Anneke Westra. The built environment of the city brushes up against the organic form of the body, and the discord between perception and reality, fantasy and memory, is encircled but never resolved. Less like a poem with illustrations or paintings with ekphrasis, these are two individual streams of making — but with common tributaries, seeping into one eventual room.
_________

Anneke Westra is a visual artist currently working out of Meanwhile Gallery as a resident art writer. Her visual practice is driven by an interest in intangible phenomena and memories, and an urgent culmination of that interest with ecological realities and thought. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literatures and Art History, and works as a bookseller in central Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Jackson McCarthy is a poet based in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. He is of Lebanese, Māori, and Pākehā descent. His poetry has been published widely in Aotearoa literary journals, including Landfall Tauraka, Ōrongohau | Best New Zealand Poems, The Spinoff, Starling, and Sweet Mammalian. His first book, Portrait, is out now with Auckland University Press.

Anneke Westra features in our current group exhibition Vespertine.

Anneke Westra is a visual artist and writer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara currently working out of Meanwhile. Her interests lie in intangible watery phenomena and the architectural shape of memory, and she is curious about how to entangle her practice with ecological
realities and eco-feminist thought. She primarily works with oil and charcoal, and enjoys playing with binaries of translucency and redactive negative spaces to ephemeral, atmospheric effect.
