MEANWHILE is seeking Art Writing Residents for 2027!

Each MEANWHILE exhibition project features the work of exhibiting artists alongside an accompanying text written by an art writer.

Art writing is a vital part of the overall exhibition project. Like the exhibiting artists, our writers are emerging or experimental practitioners with independent practices of their own.

Three writing residencies will be available in 2027. Each resident will work with MEANWHILE and its exhibiting artists across three exhibitions, contributing writing to the gallery’s exhibition programme. This will span over an estimated 3 month period. At the conclusion of their residency, residents will also have the opportunity to present work in MEANWHILE’s window space or propose an alternative project for the gallery to support. Residents will also receive support from the gallery and selected mentors throughout the programme to help further develop their practice.

Residencies are off-site, as MEANWHILE is located within a commercial building and does not offer live-in accommodation. We do have artist studios available and are happy to discuss individual space requirements with applicants. We also require all applicants to be local to Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Residents will receive a minimum stipend of $900 for the duration of their residency. If additional funding becomes available, we hope to increase this amount.

Applications close at midnight on 16 November 2026.

HOW TO APPLY:
Applications should include the following within a singular PDF:

- A short artist bio.
- Examples of previous work.
- Your preferred residency timeframe.
- (Optional) A concept for a personal pop-up project or window exhibition in 2027. Please note that opportunities for these projects are limited by MEANWHILE’s existing 2027 programme.

If you have any questions, please email us at proposals.meanwhile@gmail.com. taken in MEANWHILE by @meanwhile_gallery

‘Kit’ by Jimmy McKirdy & Freya Lloyd

Opening event Wednesday 14 October 5-7pm
Drinks will be generously provided by @abandonedbrewery

•

‘Kit’ features a series of new large scale photographic sculptures by Jimmy McKirdy and Freya Lloyd.

The exhibition will be available to view during gallery hours until November 8

•

Jimmy McKirdy (b.2006, Pōneke) uses light sensitive materials in a process interested in photographic inversion. By working simultaneously with positive and negative he explores both the figurative image and its abstracted inverse.

Freya Lloyd (b.2006, Melbourne, Australia)
Lloyd’s practice spans sculpture and photography, exploring materials and perception. Her work considers how images and constructed forms create new spatial and visual associations.

The Message, 2026 (Stained glass, Wood veneer) on now in the Window Gallery.
---
In 1977, the Voyager Golden Records were propelled into space, intended to help intelligent extraterrestrial life understand human life on Earth. The two gold disks form a NASA time capsule and contain 116 images, including “Eating, Drinking and Licking, demonstrating consumption”, and were sent off to become the farthest human-made objects from our world.
In the year 41,976 (in what was Earth time), an alien curator sets up a small installation using the motifs of one human house of the divine. Given the end they met, the curator can only assume that modes of consumption were of the greatest importance to Earth’s peoples.
---
Sabina Rizos-Shaw is a multimedia craft artist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She has been a MEANWHILE committee member and facilitator since 2021 and works as a union organiser by day. Her work is colourful and irreverent, with attempts at humour. The meticulous construction of her work playfully contrasts with its naive finish.
Sometimes this meticulous construction takes too long, which, in this case, resulted in a few days of a wood veneer teaser and an installation performance enjoyed by a few on their smoko. taken in MEANWHILE by @meanwhile_gallery

Opening Tuesday next week (6/10) is a painting and poetry exhibition 'Theory of Everything' by 2026 Writing resident @annekewestraa_ and poet @jrtmccarthy
Come and celebrate this exciting exhibition and keep your eyes peeled as we will be announcing an exciting event to accompany!
____________
Theory of Memory brings together new poems by Jackson McCarthy and new paintings by Anneke Westra. The built environment of the city brushes up against the organic form of the body, and the discord between perception and reality, fantasy and memory, is encircled but never resolved. Less like a poem with illustrations or paintings with ekphrasis, these are two individual streams of making — but with common tributaries, seeping into one eventual room.
_________

Anneke Westra is a visual artist currently working out of Meanwhile Gallery as a resident art writer. Her visual practice is driven by an interest in intangible phenomena and memories, and an urgent culmination of that interest with ecological realities and thought. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literatures and Art History, and works as a bookseller in central Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Jackson McCarthy is a poet based in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. He is of Lebanese, Māori, and Pākehā descent. His poetry has been published widely in Aotearoa literary journals, including Landfall Tauraka, Ōrongohau | Best New Zealand Poems, The Spinoff, Starling, and Sweet Mammalian. His first book, Portrait, is out now with Auckland University Press.

Kitsch Kiwiana has currently overtaken the Window Gallery, created by Jasper Elliott @jelliott_art . Catch it for the next few weeks from our WINDOW gallery

"Kitsch Kiwiana" is a collection of oil and acrylic paintings repurposing ongoing localised familiar icons. The work aims at the everyday and incidental moments of past and present culture in Aotearoa seen through a contemporary painted lens. This exhibition is an investigation into how these symbols and ideas can be recontextualised and re-evaluated when they are being removed from political, corporate and nostalgic ideologies and contexts.

Do these images still hold weight? Do these images hold symbolic weight which extends behind their current dimensionality? Can these images become complicated through the methodology of painting? taken in MEANWHILE by @meanwhile_gallery

Thank you to all who came to the PURE_CONNECTION opening last Tuesday!

PURE_CONNECTION, by artists Ivan Medrano, will be on until the 4th of October. Be sure to check it out!

————————————————————————-

Rhythmed by the inexorable march of technology, the algorithm binds bodies together. Flesh is petrified into human walls as code settles in our image.

PURE_CONNECTION explores identity formation as a digitised collective experience. Identity is relational, cultivated through embodied interactions between individuals. However, as technology continues to infuse into daily life, the prominence of algorithmic processes in self-development increases in parallel, accelerating a continuous cycle of recognition, affiliation, and rejection.

Ivan Medrano is a Filipino-Australian new media artist interrogating the nexus of perception, virtuality, and the self. Drawing upon a background in editorial fashion imagery, Medrano employs its conventions in investigating technology’s impact on the human experience.

Medrano was a creative behind the first-ever digital fashion editorials for VOGUE Philippines and PAPER Magazine. Further features and exhibitions include SHOWStudio’s Fashion Film Showcase: Digital Reality 2024, SHOWStudio’s ikon-1, PAP Magazine Korea, MEGA Magazine, Artsect Gallery London Fashion Week, and Unfamous Magazine France.
