The feature film I wrote in ‘the character driven screenplay’ class is a semi-finalist in this year’s Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival screenplay competition! 🙌🫶❤️ This is probably the most vulnerable thing I’ve ever written and I’m currently developing it further to (hopefully) make it into my first feature 🫶🎬 by @annekoolen

Not all university assignments end up screening at a major film festival. Anne Koolen’s did.

Koolen had just finished her thesis film, @fuelupfilm, for the University of Southern California and planned to pitch it to festivals.

The first on her list was the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the #Cannes Film Festival.

What a week! My USC thesis film Fuel Up screened at the American pavilion emerging filmmaker showcase at the Cannes film festival (in THE PALAIS omg) alongside 6 other incredible student films. I feel so honored to screen alongside such beautiful films 🫶❤️ Huge congrats to the winners! BIG THANKS to @americanpavilion, @indiewire and @goldhouseco for selecting my film and allowing me to go back to this amazing festival. We graduated from USC School of Cinematic Arts!! ✌️ I am SO glad a friend’s wedding in Hawaii made me spontaneously apply to USC film school and got me on this unbelievable journey, meeting so many great people. I’m forever thankful to all the lessons I learned. We rolled the credits at graduation, now it’s up to us what story we want to tell next both in our films and our lives. CONGRATS to team Amor fati for their double nomination in the Easterseals disability film challenge (best writer & best film)! It was a blast to be able to develop this story with Joe and to work with Julia, who drafted the earlier versions of the script! 🫶✨🎬 It was truly amazing to see such a supportive community at the award ceremony today. 95% of disabled roles still go to non-disabled performers, even though 1 out of 4 Americans identify as having a disability. Clearly there’s very capable people interested in fulfilling such roles, both in front and behind camera. Let’s create more opportunities Iike this and find the resources to support and accommodate more diverse artists! 🏁🩷 Thank you Joe for bringing me onto this project 🫶 taken in Sony Pictures Studios by @annekoolen
