So excited to reveal the cover for the sequel to I’M A DUMBO OCTOPUS, the second graphic novel in my marine life series for kids! This one is all about cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and is framed as a discussion between a baby dwarf sperm whale, the smallest possible whale of all the whales, and her mother. This book shows that being a little fish (ahem, mammal!) in a big ocean can have its benefits! Set for publication March 3,2026🐳🐋🐬 by @annelambelet

So excited to officially reveal the cover for my upcoming graphic novel! It doesn’t come out until March of next year but it IS available for pre-order through Amazon and Barnes & Noble and other online book sellers. I’m super proud of this one and pre-sales are important so I would love for y’all to check it out! It’s got heart. It’s got humor. It’s got loads of facts about adorable octopuses. I have high hopes for this lil dumbo😂☺️🐙

These are the recipients of the GNCRT Outstanding Comics awards in children’s non-fiction. The winner, How to Draw a Secret by @cindobindo and my fellow honor book, How to Say Goodbye in Cuban by @danielmiyaresdoodles . Having now read these poignant, meaningful books that deal with tough, real human emotion, bring to light stories from under-represented backgrounds and experiences and feel so important for kids to find, it feels sort of silly that DUMBO OCTOPUS was placed amongst them. I’m truly so honored and humbled, though, and excited to own the set altogether. Treat yourself to these books when you can. And maybe even leave reviews on Goodreads or Amazon or something if you feel so inclined☺️

What a crazy, amazing, surreal but incredibly gratifying weekend at ALA in Chicago! I had the incredible honor of accepting a GNCRT Outstanding Comics honor for Children’s comics alongside these other wildly talented artists: @paige.walshe @danielmiyaresdoodles @cindobindo @esofiii @raulthethirdvamos and @lucyknisley Make sure to check out their books! I am humbled to even be in the same room with these people let alone to get an award with them. Thank you so much to the GNCRT committee for choosing me to be a part of this!

Plus lots of books were signed at both the Lerner and Peachtree booths! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to grab a book. You are all soooo nice! And thank you very much to the publicists @lernerbooks for showing me a great time not to mention providing a room with a view😍

An absolute whirlwind but a truly great time I will never forget. I can’t thank everyone enough😱🙏🏻🙏🏻 by @annelambelet

And of course, we all know The Tale of Peter Rabbit the main character of which was based on Beatrix’s real pet rabbit, Peter Piper. In an inscription written shortly after Peter’s death, Beatrix said the following:

“In affectionate remembrance of poor old Peter Rabbit, who died on the 26th of January 1901 at the end of his 9th year…whatever the limitations of his intellect or outward shortcomings of his fur, and his ears and toes, his disposition was uniformly amiable and his temper unfailingly sweet. An affectionate companion and quiet friend.” ~Beatrix Potter

Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca were the mice Beatrix owned upon which she based The Tale of Two Bad Mice. For the book, set in a dollhouse, Norman Warne sent Beatrix dolls and doll furniture and doll food for reference. He even eventually built a little glass-fronted house for the mice! This quote is from a letter where Beatrix reported back Hunca Munca’s reaction to the new items:

“I stopped her in the act of carrying a doll as large as herself up to the nest, she cannot resist anything with lace or ribbon; (she despises the dishes).”

And this quote is a little darker, but I think it really shows the deep affection she held for the little mouse and her incredible heartbreak at the loss of her small friend, Hunca Munca:

“I cannot forgive myself for letting her tumble. I do so miss her. She fell off the chandelier; she managed to stagger up the staircase into your little house, but she died in my hand about ten minutes later. I think if I had broken my own neck it would have saved a deal of trouble.”

Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle of The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was also a real hedgehog and dear traveling companion of Beatrix. My picture book doesn’t say too much about her, but I thought this little excerpt from one of Beatrix’s letters was very sweet:

“I have got my hedgehog here with me too; she enjoys going by train, she is always very hungry when she is on a journey…[She] won’t eat shrimps; I think it is very silly of her, she will eat worms and beetles, and I think shrimps would be much nicer. I think you must ask Mrs. Tiggy-winkle to tea when she comes back to London later on, she will drink milk like anything out of a doll’s tea cup!” ~Beatrix Potter, from a letter to Winifred Warne, niece of her publisher and fiancee, Norman Warne

My new picture book, Beatrix and Her Friends, is a celebration of the real-life animals who inspired Beatrix’s stories. To that end I thought I’d share some quotes about them from Beatrix herself. In the above, illustration, Beatrix is writing The Tale of Samuel Whiskers inspired by a pet rat of the same name (and also partly by a rat infestation in her home at Hill Top Farm). The inscription from the book reads as follows:

“In remembrance of “Sammy,” the intelligent pink-eyed representative of a persecuted (but irrepressible) race. An affectionate little friend, and most accomplished thief.” ~Beatrix Potter

How much must you have loved an animal to remember them fondly enough to write a children’s book about them even in the midst of handling an infestation? Truly Beatrix’s affection and imagination helped her see the world in a whole different way💚🐀 by @annelambelet
