In the past year I have been praying for a revival in my beloved Campbell County Theatre Arts program. The lack of value placed in our program has left me hungry to fight, but also ready to give up. When they announced the loss of our teacher position, the line I kept going back to was, “Pulitzer may own the world but he don’t own us.“ I cried every time I heard The World Will Know, I cried for the version of myself who wanted to fight but had no support and I cried for the version of myself who wanted to give up. Initially, I thought pivoting toward directing middle schoolers instead of acting as a high schooler was an act of giving up on the high school program, but seeing a group so on fire for learning and creating a beautiful piece of artwork and working with a production team who operated under the same vision with the unification of all of our talents revived my love for theater. To say I am proud of these students is an understatement. I have never been prouder than I have of these young thespians. I ran them until they couldn’t run anymore and man, was it worth it. We worked on character development, acting through song, acting through dance and making bold choices. They pushed themselves out of their comfort zones too many times to count, and I got the pleasure of watching. Thank you Lord for reigniting my fire. My fight for the Campbell County Theatre Arts program continues for these students, we are far from finished. I will continue to cling to that same line from The World Will Know because it’s true, they may own the world, but they don’t own us.
