I was honored to be invited on @bbcafrique
radio earlier this month to share my perspective on African women in fashion and reflect on their presence, contribution and challenges faced in the industry.

African women have always existed across the entire fashion value chain, from craftsmanship on the continent to leadership roles in global luxury and media. What’s new is not our presence, but the visibility and the growing ability to define our own narratives.

Over the past decade, many have reclaimed autonomy through self-led initiatives and digital platforms. But visibility alone is not emancipation. Tokenism, fragile leadership roles, and structural barriers still shape who gets seen, supported, and sustained.

Actual Frame of Mind aims to shift the gaze, center context, and tell stories beyond a narrow, Western definition of African fashion.
Because representation without ownership is not progress.

This week, our cultural radar turns to Douala, where MANJU contributor Annick-Ange Logmo (@annickazl_) engages curator and art critic Ange-Frédéric Koffi (@colligit.truncis) in a critical dialogue on Dancing History, a retrospective dedicated to the prolific Senegalese photographer Adama Sylla.

At the centre of the exhibition is April 1966, when the National Ensemble of Cameroon performed at the World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar. Sylla was present, photographing the moment from within its cultural choreography. The resulting images, preserved in Saint-Louis for nearly six decades, are now shown for the first time at Galerie MAM (@galeriemam) entering circulation under conditions that reframe their reading.

For Koffi, the exhibition is less an act of retrospection than a question of activation. He resists the idea of the archive as fixed evidence, instead treating it as a site of ongoing negotiation, between what was documented, what was withheld, and what is made visible today. The works are not positioned as completed histories, but as material that continues to shift meaning through encounter.

Presented at Galerie MAM, the exhibition unfolds as both archival excavation and reactivation of memory, assembling a constellation of previously unseen images drawn from a corpus of over 30,000 negatives. Dancing History resists linear narration, instead proposing a reading of time, gesture, and social life that is structured through rhythm rather than sequence.
