Making this post to announce our new band name, “Jackero.” Our name calls back to the traditional Roud ballad “Jackaroo” or “Jack-A-Roe” that originated centuries ago in Europe before making its way to Southern Appalachia. In this song, a young woman disguises herself as a man, and using the name Jack-A-Roe, convinces the captain to allow her to board a ship bound for war. We first heard this ballad through two sisters who are old-time heroes of ours: Jean Ritchie and her older sister Edna, from Perry County, KY both recorded it in the mid 1960s. We were drawn to it and many other old-time songs in our repertoire like it because of its protagonist’s defiance of convention and prescribed roles. We have a brand new website in the link in our bio that has updates and upcoming shows (jackeromusic.com)! Thanks so much for your support, we have more exciting news coming soon!💛 📸: @tashilitch by @annie.cdavis
