My second day of the Symposium started at one of Toulouse’s landmarks: Place Saint-Sernin. The square, and the view of the basilica, are stunning. It’s almost impossible to find the “perfect” spot to sketch because every angle is beautiful.
My second stop was Place Saint-Pierre, with its breathtaking view of the Hôpital de la Grave and Pont Saint-Pierre. The Ferris wheel was also part of the skyline, so I thought la Ville Rose deserved... a pink sketch.
I also had the chance to say hello to Sora, an amazing sketcher I first met in Poznan last year and whose talent I truly admire.
In the afternoon we moved to the Fondation Bemberg. The perspective was quite challenging, and together with the heat I wasn’t really happy with my sketch. But that disappointment didn’t last long, as I had the chance to watch the incredible Barnaba Salvador drawing in action.
We ended the day at the Drink & Draw with the Milan and Clermont-Ferrand groups. In the end, though, my favourite part was simply chatting with everyone while enjoying one of the most beautiful sunsets of the week.

My first day in Toulouse started at the Japanese Garden, a little oasis of tranquillity just a few steps from the hotel.
There I met the other Annie, @sketchingroots, and we spent the morning sketching together.
In the afternoon, I had a lovely time sketching with @daniela_mysketches, @eli.stained.wings, @barbara_garufi and @poliedricapercaso. A special thanks also goes to @natalia_li_art for the encouragement and all the great recommendations.
What a wonderful start to the Symposium! ❤️ Being surrounded by fellow sketchers really is the best company you can have while travelling.

Day 3 was the last day of my short solo (sketching) trip in Paris, but it was also the hottest one.

The heatwave reached its peak, and apart from a short cloudy break, when I managed to sketch the Institut de France, it was honestly tiring even just to walk around.
Still, I wanted to make the most of my short stay, so I kept exploring and enjoyed a few more beautiful corners of the city, even if I didn’t sketch as much as I had hoped.
In the afternoon, I headed to the airport, excited to fly to Toulouse, where the Symposium had already begun.
Paris had been a wonderful start... but the best was yet to come.

Day 2 of my solo sketch trip in Paris (before the Symposium).

Just like the day before, I had a few locations in mind. After starting the day with a good coffee, I headed to my first stop: the Louvre Pyramid.
What I definitely hadn’t planned for was the incredible display by the Patrouille de France during the Bastille Day celebrations. I happily put my sketch on hold for a while to enjoy the show before getting back to drawing.
Once I finished my first sketch, I moved on to the next locations. I stopped by Hôtel de Ville, but there wasn’t really any shade to sketch from, so I kept walking. By the time I reached Place des Vosges, I was already quite tired, so I changed plans again and, after resting for a bit, I made my way to Pont Alexandre III, where I finally sketched the Petit Palais.
At the end of the day, just like on Day 1, I had fewer sketches than I’d originally planned. But I also realised I was enjoying Paris at my own pace, taking in the places, changing plans when I felt like it, and not worrying too much about filling pages.

A few months after my first USK Symposium, I had already booked my trip for this year’s edition. Since the symposium didn’t start until Wednesday, I decided to treat myself to three solo sketching days in Paris first.
I arrived with a sketchbook, plenty of supplies, and very ambitious plans. I was convinced I’d come home with pages and pages of sketches.
Reality had other plans.
Although I’ve improved over the past year, I still haven’t become much faster at sketching. After my injury, I even stopped drawing for a couple of months, which definitely didn’t help. And, above all... Paris greeted me with an intense heatwave. 🥵
In the end, I didn’t make as many sketches as I’d imagined. But somewhere between searching for shade, wandering through beautiful streets and stopping for a coffee, I discovered the joy of being a slow tourist.
This is the recap of Day 1 of my little Paris adventure before the USK Symposium. More sketches (and stories) are still to come.

To celebrate the Art Nouveau Week, I joined the USK Milano group and sketched the Casa Campanini, one of Milan’s most beautiful Liberty buildings.
I chose to draw one of the iconic statues flanking the entrance. It looked deceptively simple, but the flowing lines and intricate details made it far more challenging than I expected.
A beautiful building, a great morning of sketching, and a reminder that sketching is nice but sketching with this amazing group is even better.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No. 22 | HACKESCHE HÖFE

The Hackesche Höfe is a fascinating set of interconnected courtyards just a short walk from Hackescher Markt. Filled with cafés, restaurants, small shops, and the Chamäleon Theater, it’s one of those places where it’s easy to slow down and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
I’ve never seen a performance here, but I always enjoy wandering through the courtyards.
Sketching them in black and white was more challenging than I expected. The façades have so many dark areas and intricate details that capturing their character without colour took some effort. Still, a place this beautiful simply could not be missing into my sketchbook.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No. 21 | ALTES MUSEUM

This sketch is a blend of old and new memories.
The Lustgarten, from where you can admire both the Altes Museum and the Berliner Dom, has always been one of my favourite places in Berlin. I used to come here just to take in these beautiful buildings and the atmosphere around them.
On my most recent visit, I sat on the grass sketching the museum while a busker played one rock song after another, many of them favourites of mine. After two days of grey skies and threatening rain, the sun finally broke through, making the whole experience even more memorable.
This is the Berlin I fell in love with: its unique vibe, its beautiful architecture, and the way the city seems to come alive when the sun shines. Seventeen years later, I still love it just as much.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No. 20 | KOCHSTRASSE (CHECKPOINT CHARLIE)

This is another of Berlin’s iconic places, a powerful reminder of the city’s divided past.
At Checkpoint Charlie, you’ll find the portraits of an American and a Soviet soldier facing each other, symbolizing the Cold War divide.
For me, though, this place is also the neighborhood where some of my friends used to live, and where there was a lovely little coffee bar that I always enjoyed visiting.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No.19 | KURFÜRSTENDAMM

This was just a few minutes away from where I used to live, so I spent a lot of time walking along Ku’damm.
I always loved the buildings, the movement, and the atmosphere here. Every time I’m back to Berlin, it feels like one of those places that was constantly changing, but somehow always familiar.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No. 18 | GEDÄCHTNISKIRCHE
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Gedächtniskirche) is one of Berlin’s most recognizable landmarks. Its damaged tower has been deliberately preserved as a reminder of the destruction caused by World War II, while the striking modern church beside it symbolizes hope and renewal.
This part of the city has probably changed more than any other since I left Berlin. Where Bikini Berlin now stands, there used to be a row of rather unattractive shops selling cheap souvenirs and tourist trinkets. Today, the area has been completely transformed into a stylish shopping and lifestyle destination.
Just around the corner is Zoologischer Garten station, made famous by the book Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (Christiane F. – We Children from Bahnhof Zoo), the true story of teenagers struggling with drug addiction in 1970s Berlin. Thankfully, the area has changed dramatically since then and is now one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods.

BERLIN IMPRESSIONS No. 17 | LUFTBALLON
From the Reichstag dome and many spots across Berlin, you’ll often notice a giant balloon floating above the skyline: the WELT-Ballon (formerly known as the Hi-Flyer).
A few years ago, I took a ride, and it was a wonderful way to see Berlin from above. Since it’s a tethered helium balloon, securely anchored to the ground with a steel cable, the ascent feels smooth and surprisingly relaxing, even if you’re not a fan of heights. by @annie_galati
