✨ Life begins again
Starting again in my sixties. Making a home, making things, getting out and about and saying the honest bits aloud.

Trying to work out the right height for the hall mirror. The books were drafted in for structural support.

Update: holes drilled, mirror up, no disasters. Very pleased with my work 😉

And just like that… a new chapter begins.

New bed. New home. New morning light.
A whole new life quietly unfolding.

Here’s to the beginning ✨ by @annierewritten

I’m learning what I’d choose this time.
And it feels hopeful.

Starting again later in life isn’t loud.
It’s steady.

If you’re rebuilding too, you’re not alone.

These days I’m making “yes” my new default. If something appeals to me, I try to say yes and give it a go. I’ll go anywhere for a little adventure✨

On Wednesday, that meant an evening at @secret_sauna.

Fairy lights through the woods, a wood-fired sauna, a campfire and moonlight on the river. It was every bit as lovely as it looks.

I don’t always know what I’ll enjoy. But I’m having a lovely time finding out. ✨

Evening Embers at @secret_sauna.

A little progress in the conservatory, with a dent and a family coincidence along the way.

Ordered a cupboard, unpacked it, found it damaged, arranged a replacement… then discovered my son already had exactly the same one that they had been thinking of finding a new home for. Same colour and everything.

Note to self: try the family group chat before adding to basket. 😂

Anyone else bought something only to discover someone in the family had one going spare?

To begin with, I wasn’t glad my marriage was over. It’s taken me a long time to fully take in all he finally admitted as he walked away: that for years he’d seen our relationship as purely a business arrangement, we’d been building our pension pots rather than our future together.

On good days, there are so many positives about starting again. But I hadn’t expected how destabilising it would feel for quite some time.

I thought I knew the ground I was walking on before, even when it hurt.

Suddenly, it felt as though I was walking on marbles in an unknown land.

What took you by surprise about starting again?

Still in my dressing gown, hair clips in, enjoying a moment of sunshine. ☀️

I may not even get properly dressed today. I feel like I’ve gone to enough effort putting my earrings in.

A reel by @piecesofpaige__ got me thinking this morning.

I’ve always fancied making sloe gin, and this year I finally found myself in the right place to do it. In every sense, really.

The jars are now sitting on the kitchen worktop quietly getting on with it.

This is my favourite time of year. Dark evenings, candles, the fire lit, good food—and by Christmas, something lovely to pour and share with old friends and new.

Maybe this is how new traditions begin.

Has anyone else found themselves starting new traditions, this time around?

What these quiet clips don’t show is that it’s been a really hard week, with several things hitting at once. But I suppose that’s Instagram, isn’t it? Showing the good bits. And in amongst the hard parts, there have been some lovely little moments.

A little sewing. A little gardening. Two little chairs. And one big, beautiful cuddle with a darling dog. 🤎

The decorating process is going well. by @annierewritten

Life is good. Really good, actually. I’m loving where I am and how I feel each morning when I wake up.

But every now and then I still look back. I think my brain is still joining the dots, the why, the how, the when.

Maybe that’s what happens when there’s finally enough breathing space to make sense of things.

I don’t want to live in the past. Sometimes looking back just helps me understand it.

At the end of a 36 year relationship, untangling a life is about more than just deciding what furniture to keep.

At one point, I wanted to get rid of absolutely everything.

At another, I wanted to hang on to everything.

Looking back, I think I became very focused on the stuff around me because it was something I could control, when so much of my world felt completely out of my hands.

Letting things go felt huge. And equally, keeping things felt huge too.

But so far, I haven’t missed anything I let go.

And I’m still letting things go.

Who knows what will be left at the end of it!
