Summer is here

Enjoyed the day by exploring the gardens of Amsterdam including @museumvanloon, and many many other amazing canal houses!

Feet are sore, skin sun-kissed, and still riding the high of the Dutch win last night 🧡

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and looking forward to more summer fun 🌞

☀️🐛🌷How much do you know about narrow piano keys? 🤯🎹

When I was a young pianist, I didn’t even know narrow keys existed, but I sure remember being frustrated by the size of my hands.

It took me until I was 27 to learn about and play narrow keys for the first time. In January 2025, I played my first concert on narrow keys after two days of rehearsal, and finally, in August 2025, I practiced for four days in a row on Hannah Riemann’s narrow keys in New York. I felt so transformed as a pianist that leaving them behind when coming home to Amsterdam broke my heart.

That’s when I decided to take the leap and ask @muziekinstrumentenfonds whether they’d consider investing in a set of narrow keys for a @steinwayandsons model A piano I loan from them.

I still remember the moment they said yes: I sat in my room for a good 30 minutes, stunned by just how much my life as a pianist would change. I could tackle new repertoire without fear of injury and find new flexibility in my hands.

Today kicks off a new six-month video series, where my guests and I will talk about everything related to narrow keys. I hope that sharing what I’m learning on my journey will help me process this enormous change in my musical life.

Someone else will be able to loan this narrow-key piano after I am finished. I am so touched by how the Foundation supports the values of accessibility, inclusion, and innovation through its many projects. I’m especially happy that by daring to ask, I also opened the door for other small-handed pianists.

We’ll also share video updates for important milestones in the process, such as when the keys are delivered from @kluge_klaviaturen to the @atelierchrismaene in Belgium, when the new action is fitted to the piano, and when the piano is delivered to my house.

2026 is definitely an accelerando kind of year 🎹🤩🥳

On this year’s piano day, I am very much moved to announce the support of Het @muziekinstrumentenfonds towards the commission and installation of a set of narrow keys made by Kluge and an action made by @atelierchrismaene into @steinwayandsons Model A piano. This piano and its narrow keys will be on loan to me for my personal use and thereafter remain in their collection for the benefit of other pianists after me.

The support of the Muziekinstrumentenfonds in this special project is landmark: First, it means that pianists seeking an instrument from the foundation now have the choice to select the size of their keys, an enormous step in pianistic empowerment that is an achievement in accessibility and consequently, social equity. Second, the Fund’s investment in instrumental innovation broadcasts an important message, which is that musicians should not be limited by material reality: As musicians we have the power and responsibility to inform and encourage instrumental innovation in the name of musical progress.

Last week @fritsschuttemuziek , head of the instrument collection of the Muziekinstrumentenfonds and I visited the Maene Atelier in Ruislede, Belgium. It meant a great deal to me that Chris Maene, renowned builder of historical and innovative modern pianos, spoke up and advocated for narrow keys. He explained that there are so many pianists who have a great deal of talent but struggle to make their talent known simply because conventional keys are too big for them. @wolf_leye encouraged me by saying my request for narrow keys was absolutely reasonable and the direction of the future.
For the rest of 2026 when these narrow keys are being made and installed into the piano, I look forward to sharing more information with you through a video series. The videos will explore a variety of subjects related to narrow keys, including their history, technical and artistic considerations, and their place in the piano world today. At the link in my bio, you can read more about the project and donate if you feel so compelled. I am profoundly grateful to the Foundation for their collaboration: Together, will take a step together into the future of pianos. 🎹 taken in Atelier Chris Maene by @anniezguo

“My client would like Thai Food and a Diet Coke in her dressing room.” c. 2000

Few artists are so lucky to call their managers a truly good friend and creative accomplice. I have the special privilege of announcing that beginning in 2026, Annie Guo will represent me as my artist manager.

Music has always been social for me, in chamber music reading parties with friends, piano lessons with cherished mentors, and professional collaborations. Being part of From the Top showed me early on that even, and perhaps especially as a soloist, I am better when working with a team and in conversation with others. Since meeting Annie at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam a year ago (thanks @conradtao !), our friendship and conversations have played a major role in evolving my ideas on performance and my artistic path. I am especially excited that our work together extends beyond a traditional booking arrangement and engages with Annie’s activity as a producer and creative herself.

Annie combines high-level artistic vision with the practical skills and experience to realize it. When I visited her at work at a recent concert at David Geffen Hall in New York, it was clear how deeply the musicians valued her. I admire how she rises to the responsibility of caring for musicians, venues, audiences, and the performing arts experience as a whole. As founder of Guo Productions, Annie has worked as a consulting producer for the Lincoln Center Festival Orchestra (formerly the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra) for nearly a decade and contributed to the artistic planning of Little Island’s inaugural season and the NYC Free Festival. Now splitting her time between Amsterdam and New York, she continues to produce projects in both cities.

An accomplished pianist and electronic music producer, her first-hand knowledge of how music is made—alone and with others—grounds her artistic convictions. Her presence makes me a better musician and professional and I am so lucky to call her my friend and now, my manager! My neighbor Otto says, "We make a good team” 🤓😎Two April Bay Area babies (our high school piano teachers are friends!) 🥷🥷See you at @apap365 2026 in New York, January 8–11!!! taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @anniezguo

She's an Aries due to medical necessity ♈

Belated, but I had to share...After two long years, two weeks wasn't nearly enough time spent with you, but I'll take it for now :) 12 years of friendship are only the beginning and I'm more than lucky to consider you one of my best friends.

From where it all began at Columbia, exploring the city where this friendship spawned, getting you to unleash your inner Dutch self on a bike, soaking up all the drinks and good music, witnessing so so so much incredible art, exploring a new city in the rain, making new friends and seeing old ones, stuffing ourselves silly with all the good foods, this trip was filled to the brim with all the good laughs and chats!

You are an incredible human @em.shyr and I cannot tell you how proud I am of you. Getting to see all your hard work and dedication come to its mighty conclusion was incredibly special. I know this is only the beginning of another sublime chapter in life for you and I will be here cheering you on ❤️
