Have never been more PROUD of a project than I am of this one.

📣 OUT NOW! 💿 I Tell You Me on @carrierrecords with @annikasoco @noissaxophone and remixes by @phongdocs @darian.donovan.thomas @noplexus.

A celebration of queer joy and defiance, "I Tell You Me" features @annikasoco's original song cycle, which questions gender roles and rejoices in the beauty of queer self-expression and empowerment. In the spirit of individual expression, the song cycle is followed by remixes of each song, each created by a different queer artist: Phong Tran, Darian Donovan Thomas, and No Plexus and celebrating their unique voices through their own performances, composing, and production. 🌈💕

🎧 Listen now on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you get your music.

Annika Socolofsky is a composer and avant folk vocalist who explores corners and colors of the voice frequently deemed to be "untrained" and not "classical." Described as “unbearably moving” by Gramophone and “grotesquely gorgeous” by the Chicago Tribune, her music erupts from the embodied power of the human voice. She communicates this through mediums ranging from orchestral and operatic works to unaccompanied folk ballads and unapologetically joyous Dolly Parton covers. Annika writes extensively for her own voice, notably composing a growing repertoire of “feminist rager-lullabies” under the titles of Don’t say a word and I Tell You Me. These works confront centuries of damaging lessons taught to young children by retelling old lullaby texts for a new, queer era.

Taking these rager-lullabies on the road, Annika has performed with ensembles including ~Nois, Eighth Blackbird, New European Ensemble, Albany Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Latitude 49, and Contemporaneous. Recordings of her music are available on New Amsterdam, Bright Shiny Things, Naxos, and other labels. A recipient of the 2021 Gaudeamus Award, she continues to shape the contemporary music landscape both on stage and in academia. She holds a PhD in Composition from Princeton University and currently serves as Associate Professor of Composition at the University of Colorado Boulder.

A few highlights from my new audio documentary series on queer elders in collaboration with @unheardofensemble and @xuan.films. Over the coming year, we’ll be working the Center on Colfax in Denver to document the stories of LGBTQ+ elders in music as a form of a living, artistic archive. For this series, I decided to first start close to home with my own family members Allan Oliver & Gary Simundson. I’m so grateful to them for sharing their stories with me, and as a new parent, I really resonated with their values around chosen family. ❤️ by @annikasoco

5 years married, 10 years together. Scrolling back through my camera roll, it’s sad how few photos of just us I have from the last year. Despite all the changes and challenges of parenthood (good and bad), you’re still the center of my universe. I love you, darwin’. Happy anniversary. by @annikasoco
