Multani Pottery - The art of Kashigari

Since Yumna is the resident artist of this page, and because I got inspired after a friend asked me for souvenir ideas for her friends abroad, I decided it would be fun to draw her painting the iconic blue pottery of the city of Saints; Multan. From there I decided to add a little bit of folklore elements. The Legend of Sohni Mahiwal tells of a woman (Sohni) who would cross the river Chenab using an earthen baked pot to meet with her lover Mahiwal, however when her family found out, they replaced the baked pot with an unbaked one, causing Sohni to drown as Mahiwal watched before joining her under the waves. Since Multan is located near the Chenab I chose the song 'Par Chanaa De' which is in reference to the story. Also you can see Yumna painting an unconventional design on her pot 👀

Ajrak printing — the colours of Sindh.

With it's origins tracing all the way back to the Indus Valley Civilization ( approx 5000 years ago) ajrak printing is the traditional craft of the Sindh region. Sindh also has a folktale called Umar Marvi, which tells the story of a beautiful woman Marvi who was kidnapped by the king Umar so he could marry her. But no matter how much he bribed or persuaded her, she refused his advances and wanted to only return to her people. In the end, her stubbornness led to her release and return to her people. I think it's a great example of not only Marvi's resilience, but that of Sindhi culture and the art of Ajrak still continuing in this age of automation.
A few little details I included in the drawing are Yunna's hands being stained blue because of the dying process, and the designs on the cloth she's printing including the Indus River Dolphins which are a rare endangered species found only in the Indus river. As a homage to Ajrak's ancient roots, I drew the Priest King statue which shows him wearing a shawl with patterns very reminiscent of ajrak. Even the song I chose is in reference to the Umar Marvi legend.

Sir Khizer the Stern , Protector of the House of Nurani 🤭
Idk what possessed me to draw my grumpy baby as a knight, although it does suit his character and role in the actual story.

The tribal carpets of Balochistan.

Was meant to be the third part of my series of drawing Yumna learning different traditional crafts from across Pakistan, but I got distracted and the sketch stayed unfinished. However recent events involving the life imprisonment of human rights activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch inspired me to finally finish this drawing.

Usually, I would like to mention some sort of folktale or share some cultural facts, but I would rather shed light on the injustices taking place in Balochistan instead. Demanding accountability from the state is not a crime, standing up for your rights is not a crime, and every citizen has a right to a fair trial. The people of Balochistan deserve better.

Probably the first drawing I've completely dedicated to Malaika.
I don't talk about Bk 3 much because I don't have that one as figured out as the first two, but it does take place in the 1940s during the partitioning of India, hence why I wanted to draw a train scene with Malaika because of how big a part the railway was during the mass migration following partition.

Created this as part of @umairnajeebkhan and @diamondpaints challenge to use their colour of the year in my artwork.

You all know how obsessed I am with the colour yellow and using it to depict sunlight, so this was just another excuse to draw a scene from my book with some pretty lighting. I might have mentioned that Anarkali is a singer and performer. Infact she's quite a celebrity in the Jinn world. The song perfectly suits how I imagine her voice to sound. Yumna and Mari get to enjoy a private concert, and surprisingly Khizer decides to join them 🤣 Although I imagine this wholesome scene will quickly dissolve into another argument between Khizer and Anarkali, but let's not think about that.
