🎵 Soundcheck in Bremen yesterday- what a treat to play another grand piano - and tonite I get to again in #hamburg at the @birdland_hamburg . With a still heavy and shocked heart I am announcing to those of you who haven’t heard yet that on July 8, 2026 my siblings and I lost our mother, Louisa Bruinsma, 12 days after my sister brought her to emergency, where it was confirmed 3 days later she had stage 4 cancer. My father has lost his wife of 51 years, only 5 days before their 52nd wedding anniversary. Somehow the car accident that my parents were in at the end of April provoked some breast cancer that my mom had easily dealt with a few years earlier, and by the time this was discovered 7 weeks after my parents’ accident it had spread to at least 4 places in my mom’s body. After spending as much time as I could at the hospital and saying my last goodbyes I left town the day before my mom passed to BC, to perform 7 concerts in 7 days, and 6 days after that I left for France, where I’ve been since Monday, for rehearsals and concerts here. This month has been a complete blur, and I have been off social media the whole time. To be honest I have been somewhat dreading coming back to it, and I won’t have time to respond to everyone’s messages and comments about this post until at least next week, but in the meantime I know my mom was a dearly loved woman who left a lasting mark on a vast amount of people, and we are all lucky to have had a such a mother, sister, wife, Oma, friend, and neighbour in our lives. I am grateful for the time we did have with her, and personally especially glad we could release the song and video of “A Dollar & a Suitcase” that she was so proud of —and that is about her and her own mother— before she passed. And I am so immeasurably grateful for the members of AV & the Inner City and my co-producer Elie Merier for helping me put that song and video out to the world, which has my mom’s voice in the choir and who appears in the music video, as no money could buy the chance to do that now. Thank you also to the friends, family, and neighbours who have been by my side through this crazy time, and especially to the person who took this invaluable picture and made sure my mom knew I am loved. The celebration of her life will be on Aug 21– time & place TBC. RIP dear mama ❤️ by @annvriend

I know I am so lucky to still have him around, and also that he was more than just around my whole life— he is and was the best kind of Dad anyone could ask for, with only the mildest drawback of being somewhat defied by “easy assembly” kits 😊🛠️ Thank you so much for everything, Dad ❤️❤️❤️

We almost lost him and my Mom recently, and that sure put a whole lot into perspective. Drive safely, everyone. And make sure to spend time with those you love while you can. Thanks for all these times and sooooooo many more, Dad ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ by @annvriend

🎥 Full vid link in bio ⬆️ We didn’t start off with the focus on this release we’d hoped for- and yet we are thrilled the vid- and the song- are being received so well 😯😍 It’s so encouraging, as it’s our 1st official music vid as a group, and it was edited as AV’s mom was in the hospital from a serious car accident- and it’s a song about her and her mom, and about how hard it is to say goodbye 😳🫢 But she’s ok now, and so proud, as we all are! I have to apologize it’s taken me so long to post an update about my parents. Their recovery is both fast and slow but in general they are doing remarkably well, and are home from the hospital, and I am so incredibly grateful to their community for their help and care, and personally to my own friends and fans for your concern ❤️

Relatedly we are just so pleased- for our own sake( @avinnercity ) and for my Mom, who is in this video, that in less than 2 weeks the “A Dollar & A Suitcase” video has over 23,000 streams and counting. Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽. It always means a lot but this one especially does ❤️❤️❤️🎥

AV’s folks were in a bad car accident last Tuesday 💔. They are both gonna make it but they are very injured and still in the trauma unit at the hospital. On Friday we released a song called “A Dollar & A Suitcase,” which tells the story of Louisa’s mom, AV’s grandma, saying goodbye to her, and universal goodbyes over generations and immigration. We surprised Louisa on her bday last year by inviting her to our rehearsal to hear it, which was one of the 1st times we ever sang AV’s new arrangement of it. We got through about 3 words of it before we were all crying 😁🤦🏽‍♀️🤭🥹. That is to say, even before this recent accident the song brings up a lot of emotions. Now it’s a bit off the charts 🥲😳💔. Pls do us and Louisa the honour of checking it out for yourself. The links to it— and the lyrics and the sheet music for it- are in our bio and right here, and it’s out in all platforms worldwide.
