An inexplicable mental & emotional block made a home for itself
around Spring 2023. I chalked it up to past pain and current life events, and attempted to carry on, even as I struggled with the inability to introspect or write. Months went by. The stubborn guest dug in and settled down more comfortably, as if to announce that it was not transient. This malaise paled in comparison to what ensued.

The sheer brutality of the horrors that have been unleashed on the people of Palestine, and the ever increasing crimes on them since Oct 2023 — not to mention for the past several decades — have had me questioning my humanity, and that of the world on a daily basis.

While desperately looking for ways to support — or perhaps to blunt my rage, helplessness and guilt — I crossed paths with incredible human beings, including some native Palestinians in forced exile who helped me unlearn, relearn and grow in my solidarity. None of this work will ever be fully done, for it is a life-long path. Clearly, “never again” was only lip service. The lived experiences of these people delivered more profound lessons than the narratives of history books.

This week, something shifted within me. What was it about this week that made this possible? The brutality continues to intensify. My rage, anger and helplessness are ongoing. What could it be then? I struggled to put a finger on it. Until tonight.

Tonight, it dawned on me that this is introspection. This is going within to witness the discomfort and the pain. And I realized that it is thanks to three very significant conversations that I had had with kindred spirits from 🇵🇸 this week.

First, my journalist brother, Awny, (@awny__journalist ) moved me to tears. The first thing he said when we chatted was that he was worried about me and that he’s relieved to hear from me. I had reached out to ask if he and his colleagues were OK in light of the targeted killing of journalists. How does he have this endless capacity for love and care when facing death daily? No words can adequately describe the light that this phenomenal human being is.

This old friend on my path today invited me to pause underneath his glowing mane for a while.

I did. And when I looked up to behold him in his fiery glory, it seemed as if he was reaching out to fold me into his warm embrace.

As emotions arose and jostled for attention — some transformative, others stagnating — he seemed to whisper to me that he, too, was going through changes, and that in that pain of transformation lies an inherent renewal. A renewal that prepares itself in the harsh winds of winter but one that eventually embraces the sun when spring arrives.

I’ll remember this friend’s wisdom when the last of the leaves fall and winter arrives to make itself a home here for a while.
