If your bookkeeper has ever asked you for receipts and you went digging through your e-transfers to find them, this one’s for you.

An e-transfer shows money left your account. That’s it. It doesn’t tell anyone what it was for, who it went to, what was purchased, or whether there was HST on it. And that last part matters more than people think.

Your bookkeeper needs the actual invoice from the vendor. The one that shows what they charged you for and whether sales tax was included. Because if there’s HST on that expense, you may be able to claim it back as an input tax credit. But only if you have the paperwork to back it up.

No invoice means no ITC. And that’s money left on the table.

Your e-transfer history is not your recordkeeping system. It never was.

This is one of the most common cash flow problems I see. The HST comes in, it’s sitting in the account, it looks like money, and it gets spent.

And then filing comes around and it’s just not there. It was never yours. CRA is just letting you hold it for a minute. Treat it that way from day one.

The ‘I’ll deal with it later’ pile is where clean books go to die. Dext lets you forward receipts straight from your inbox or snap them on your phone. It reads the data automatically, no manual entry.

I personally love it. That’s literally why I pay for a subscription for every single one of my clients. And honestly, even if you’re not working with us, it’s still worth it.

This is the thing nobody wants to say out loud. Every joe smoe out here is posting their revenue like it’s the whole story.

Some people need a bookkeeper who handles the numbers and stays out of the way. Others want a thought partner they can check in with every week.

Most people fall somewhere in between, and that changes depending on what season the business is in. I don’t think there’s a wrong way to use financial support.
