While I live a simple simple life… in a complicated, complicated world. I do think an awful lot about justice. And why she has the longest arms and the most patience of any human attribute or construct. Right now I look around at those that are consistent. Cannot be bought. Stay the course. Especially when they have a lot to lose. When they could actually make a lot of money by being rewarded in return for loyalty …Which is different than fealty…. to a person, place or principal. An ordinary sailor, a journalist, a teacher… a lawyer. People who know and sense a truth that cannot be changed with threat or bodily harm. I ask myself every day how I would hold up under others’ dire situations every day. I am strong enough for my simple simple life. But everything is getting close to home for everyone. Stay human. Soul in tact out there. Hold out for lady justice. At least do not get in her way. The president was 7 miles away the other night and I had no desire to go. Staged in a rodeo arena with all the red, white and blue and stories of little boys saying their prayers at night making billionaires seem like ordinary children just like us…I said my prayers too. For democracy. The other tried and true options bring despair to all but the wealthiest and whitest and those who can be bought. That rally looked all-American while at the same time we severed ties with the free world and aligned ourselves with Putin. It has been a deeply curious week. It should feel like alarm bells. I am hoping the calm is just an inner knowing that some passage of time is held in the hands of justice. Stay human. I mean it. Because I am just not smart enough to follow the plot line right now. I used to be terrified of Montana’s vast open and endless spaces… I would circle out for a peak, drive across in a hurry (90mph is the cruising speed), go to wrestling tournaments and wonder how folks lived there. And now… I crave that silent sun and cleansing wind. The subtlety of grass and low leaf sounds. Different birds and flowers. The fact that the landscape’s surprises open up below you. At your feet. A horizon line turns into land-falls and sudden navigational drops. From plateaus to cuts and coulees; not the rising mountains that draw your eyes upward, but vast uncrossable creek beds and wide river bottoms drawing you down out of the sun and into the deep. Thousand foot drop-ins where trees and animals gather out of the wind. Trails in and out of the only water for the endless miles around. Ribbon oasis; beckoning “Come down out of the wind, travel inside the cracked open and layered earth.” You can smell the sage, like secrets, after the rain. Old abandoned homesteads have a pull for their abandonment. A dream that lived for all it was worth until that one bad year, that accident or the loneliness sent the lady of the house back east. I used to be terrified of the vast openness; more than I ever was afraid to get lost in the woods of Maine. But that sun always places perfect shade on that natural compass and those stars are always out at night. You know right where you are and dam, it’s a long ways out from the trees and the mountains. You know, without a doubt, you are a long ways from home. But you are not lost. You know right where you are. by @anotherdetour

August 3- fire in the mountains the night before and snow in them by morning. Wish it put the fires out but that’s months away by @anotherdetour
