I Shared My 3 Worst Airports…
And the Comments Said, “You’re Not Done.”

My list of Europe’s three worst airports caused a minor international debate. 😂

So I did what any responsible person would do: I counted the comments.

You added:

6. Lisbon LIS
5. Madrid MAD
4. Schiphol AMS

And my original picks still held the top spots:

3. London Heathrow LHR
2. Frankfurt FRA
1. Paris CDG

But after hundreds of comments, arguments, rebuttals and what I can only describe as airport trauma bonding, the majority agrees on one thing:

CDG is still 1. 🏆

Congratulations, Paris. I guess. 😂

Tell me which one I still got wrong. (I know you will.)

And now I have to ask…

Which 3 airports in Europe are actually the BEST?

Ten months of loyalty, and Alaska said, “Have a chocolate.” 😂

In fairness, it is malted milk chocolate.

All jokes aside, I’m not chasing airline status or expecting first-class upgrades and free flights every time I travel. But after 10 months, multiple Alaska flights, several domestic and international partner-airline trips, and enough flying to reach Gold status, I’m honestly struggling to see the value.

While I was Silver, I didn’t receive a single complimentary upgrade. Now that I’m Gold, I’m curious to see whether that changes.

Partner-airline mileage earning has also been frustrating. I’ve had to submit missing-mile requests, follow up repeatedly, and in some cases still receive only a fraction of the miles I expected.

I understand there are rules, but Atmos increasingly feels like you need a college course to understand every fare class, booking channel, partner rule, and footnote just to know what you’ll earn.

I’m not asking for endless perks. I’m just questioning how much loyalty this loyalty program actually rewards.

But hey…the chocolate was good. 😂

Atmos members, I really want to love this program. What has your experience been? And if you use another airline loyalty program, what keeps you loyal?

The 3 Worst Airports to Connect Through in Europe?

#3, FRA, Frankfurt.

A 90-minute connection sounds reasonable—until you’re crossing an active tarmac surrounded by massive planes, then taking a bus ride to the terminal, going through a security checkpoint run by the slowskis and finishing with a marathon to your gate.

Last to board, first to realize my bag didn’t. Spending 24 hours luggage-free during a 3-day stop put Frankfurt firmly on my avoid-if-possible list.

No option but to connect through FRA? Allow at least 2 hours. Preferably 2½.

#2, LHR, London Heathrow.

We’d just cleared security in Copenhagen. Then we landed at Heathrow and immediately had to do it all over again. Trust issues.

Next came Heathrow’s liquids rule. Travelers had to stop, remove their liquids and repack them into clear plastic bags before security. Open suitcases and luggage landmines everywhere.

Mix in rude security agents, tearful travelers and a 20-plus-minute walk to the gate. Heathrow became an airport I avoid whenever possible.

Still convincing yourself that was a one-off to justify the cheap fare? Give yourself 2½ to 3 hours.

And #1, CDG, Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Confusing terminals. Long walks. Repeated security and passport control.

Add to that meticulous bag inspections and bus rides to some gates. Connections and patience can unravel fast.

Food options along our route were surprisingly limited, too. Nothing like adding “hangry” to the chaos, so don’t skip the meal on the plane.

And yes, we missed our flight. That was the tiebreaker between Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle.

If you have absolutely no other choice, allow at least 3 hours.

Want material for your own worst-airport post? Schedule a connection of less than 3 hours at CDG.

Which airport would you add to this list?

Yes, I still have a job, and I work full time! 😂

The truth is, I get around four weeks of PTO each year, but I maximize the time I have. I usually take two to four work trips a year, and when they take me somewhere I’m interested in exploring, I add a weekend or a few personal PTO days to the beginning or end.

I also plan trips around weekends and holidays whenever possible. It doesn’t give me unlimited vacation time, but it helps the time I have go much further.

What other travel questions can I answer?

Would you believe this medieval Old Town is part of one of the world’s most advanced digital societies?

Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved medieval trading cities, filled with cobblestone streets, fortified walls, merchant houses and buildings dating back centuries.

Yet beyond those medieval walls lies one of the world’s most digitally advanced countries, with digital identification, online voting, e-residency and government services that can be accessed online.

Welcome to Estonia 🇪🇪, my 49th country.

Here, centuries-old streets meet a remarkably modern way of life.

This is why I travel: to discover the stories and characteristics that make each place unique.

Aperol Spritz vs. Hugo Spritz

After a month in Europe, I’m ready to weigh in. The Hugo Spritz is light, refreshing, slightly sweet, and made with elderflower, mint, lime, and prosecco. No bitter aftertaste. No pretending you enjoy it just because you’re sitting somewhere pretty in Europe.

If an Aperol Spritz tastes like summer in Italy, a Hugo Spritz tastes like summer in Italy without the struggle. 🍋‍🟩🌿🥂

Team Hugo. I said what I said.

Are you Team Hugo or Team Aperol?

Country 48: Finland! 🇫🇮

Finland gave me beautiful waterfront views, striking architecture, and Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located across several islands off the coast of Helsinki.

From the city streets to the peaceful ferry ride across the harbor, Helsinki felt clean, calm, and effortlessly beautiful.

Another country explored and another stamp in the travel story. Finland officially makes 48! 🇫🇮✨

Country 47: Slovenia! 🇸🇮

Slovenia gave me a little bit of everything: charming Ljubljana, the incredible underground world of Škocjan Caves, the postcard-perfect beauty of Lake Bled, and coastal views in Piran.

It was also surprisingly affordable. In fact, it was probably the least expensive country I’ve visited and definitely the most affordable destination on this trip.

Slovenia would be a great starter destination for international travelers. It’s affordable, easy to explore, and compact enough to experience several completely different landscapes in one trip. It also borders Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, putting even more countries and cities within easy reach.

Small country, big surprise. Country 47 definitely delivered. 🇸🇮

If Slovenia isn’t on your Europe bucket list, you should definitely add it!

Country 46: Liechtenstein! 🇱🇮

Blink and you might miss the sixth-smallest country in the world. You can drive across it in less than 30 minutes, but this tiny country is surrounded by some seriously beautiful Alpine scenery.

Yes, it’s a real country. And of course, I went! 😂

Be honest, did you know Liechtenstein was its own country?
