This autumn was great, lots of fun and lots of pain, just the way I love it. It’s that particular combination that makes you grow. A good reminder that there is no companion but your shadow, and even it won’t follow you into the pitch black darkness. So, here we go. Cheap & capable recce #nightvision setup for just around $2500. ~1900 FOM.
Full components list with prices included.

It took quite a while to figure out component compatibility, so hopefully this will save some time & money for those who are just getting started.

The core of the NVD is the NVT6L tube (RES 68, SNR 26.72, FOM 1818, Gain 11800, Output Brightness 7.94, P43, Autogated), which I bought from MEI on Taobao. NVT6 is quite rare, and I suspect it’s mostly available through government contracts. The “L” at the end suggests it’s underspec. This particular unit is only slightly underspec, but it saved me a few bucks.

The housing is #yaksa14, which is beautiful. It’s compatible with all #pvs14 optics while remaining lightweight and affordable. Again, sourced from MEI.

The optics were the biggest surprise. They’re Norinco mil-spec lenses, and they are gorgeous. They cost less than Fujinon/Carson and other mil-spec lenses while offering similar performance. The camera may introduce some distortion, but in real life I observe zero distortion and a crisp image. I bought them from @stealthoptika.

The mounts saved me a lot of money. The @argusnightvision A4 LWNVG costs 2.5× less than a Wilcox while being just as good. The @sotac_gear MAX14 J-arm is compatible with Yaksa. For the shroud, I chose the Tier None MBS because it includes a bungee retention cord.

What else? The Sotac IRIS is quite useful as both sacrificial glass and a fast-focus solution. The @unobtainium_gear ANWRS MK3 with a custom 3D-printed mount is the mission recorder I used. Since Yaksa requires a custom mount anyway, if I were starting from scratch today, I would probably build my own recorder based on a MateCam 4K WiFi hidden camera. I included some footage shot through ANWRS. Bright spot in the middle is because of Iris.

Last but not least, the mounting platform: a cool Bravo Six boonie hat from @carcajoutactical, purchased with the NVG harness and battery pack, which can also be used to store a counterweight.
