Another successful GBM! We learned about the different kinds of radiation, explored Geiger counters with point sources, and got to learn about different kinds of dosimeters!

Meet Mary Keen—a junior physics major interning at @nrcgov, where she works on licensing for nuclear waste storage and transportation!

Mary is passionate about nuclear safety. On campus, she serves as president of @ans_umd and has taken a course designed to train students to operate UMD’s nuclear reactor.

But she wasn’t always on this career path. She credits @univofmaryland for empowering her to expand her horizons.

"I’ve had such wonderful people behind me at UMD," Mary said. "I’ve grown so much, and I don’t think I would trade that for anything."

ANS had our first event of the semester — a reactor tour!

Students had the opportunity to learn more about the reactor on campus and see firsthand how it operates. It was a great way to kick off the semester and dive into real world nuclear science!
