Donald Trump has no concept of beauty. He has never loved a piece of the natural world. He has never watched a sunset from a sandstone bluff with a few dear friends, never felt the anticipation of the unknown around a canyon corner, never examined the tiny plants growing from a seep in the cliff wall, never smelled the fresh desert bloom after a spring rain, never helped a friend push their truck out of the mud, never sipped cold whiskey around a campfire while staring at millions of stars, never seen the glitter of cryptobiotic soil in the moonlight, never hid from the harsh desert sun under a juniper or in a cave, never known that forgotten loneliness at the end of the world that one finds among the mesas and canyons of the American Southwest.

If you know me, you know that I feel the desert is a deeply spiritual place, where one finds powerful connections to the land, to our history, and to ourselves. Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante are irreplaceable. What they take will be lost forever. When money and ego take precedence, there is no limit to what we can lose. This land is sacred to so many and more important than any individual. There is treasure everywhere far beyond anything that can be measured in dollars.

This sets a dangerous precedent for our other public lands, and more will undoubtedly suffer the same fate as Bears Ears and Grand Staircase. If you’ve experienced the magic of this landscape, take action. Call your representatives and help defend it.
