I had an amazing experience at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo, as I’ve been attending the same convention every year. Believe it or not, this was my sixth, or maybe seventh, time at the same museum near my college, where I graduated. Considering how much it has changed, you can now play Nintendo 64 games set up for the 30th anniversary, along with this year’s panel featuring Twitch streamer AshSaidhi, who shares her experiences with some of the best and worst games she has played. She also asks the audience if they own the accessories used for the system and mentions Quest 64, which, honestly, I haven’t played. There are also some fantastic free exhibits to try if you haven’t had the chance to explore these consoles yet. They feature classic games that bring back nostalgia, including rare consoles I’ve seen many times before at this same venue. Let’s not forget the Arcade Highway, where I keep exploring the classic cabinets, including the oldest one, Computer Space. Heck, there’s even a Nintendo 64 DD add-on that I unfortunately skipped since I only went on Friday. If anyone who attended was there, I hope you had an excellent time at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo, including my friend Anthony.

You guys can post your GTA games all you want, but we’re talking about some radical adventurous quest here in the fictional town of Radiator Springs. A combination of Need for Speed and Midnight City, in which you control Lightning McQueen in an adventure/racing game? What can go wrong?

Continuing with Day 5 of RCEWorldCup, Cars: The Video Game, released the same year as the movie, features an open world where you control the main character. You unlock new areas by completing race track missions. It directs racers through checkpoints and open-world courses, and then lets them compete in the Piston Cup, though the camera sometimes gets a little awkward while driving, based on my first impression. The mini-games also have collectibles scattered in the hub and a tipping game to control Mater to tiptoe and annoy the cow mechanic tracker things. Yeah, if you thought the movie was weird enough, they have to add farm animal vehicles in a video game.

Considering how it adapts the movie, this honestly seems to take place after the events of the first film, which doesn’t make sense because the movie was released on June 9th, just a few days after the game came out. So, there’s no consistency. Then again, I haven’t finished the whole game yet. The only reason I got this from a convention last year was that my best friend is a huge fan of the Car series. And while I grew up watching the Toy Story films, I found it strange to see talking vehicles in an uncanny world. Jesus, and I believe toys aren’t supposed to move around in real life. Probably food for thought.

On the letter M of RCEA2Z, Mickey Mousecapade is an early Disney game for the NES, released in Japan in 1987 by Hudson Soft and later published by Capcom in 1988. This aligns with Capcom’s history of producing many Disney-licensed games on Nintendo consoles, including popular titles based on the Disney Afternoon shows.

The game features traditional platforming, with levels that involve navigating mazes row by row, requiring turnabout. Other sections are side-scrolling, though avoiding hits is what you have to be warned about when you see these flying fish. Yeah, sound familiar. Thankfully, players can recover health with extra cakes and gain invisibility from a fairy. Minnie usually follows Mickey to keep up, or she gets kidnapped. Mickey must find a hidden Red key by shooting stars, then touch the correct golden statue to rescue Minnie. The game includes bizarre areas where players match up the B button to shoot at moving enemies that won’t stay still, leading to boss battles with villains from Disney films.

The plot involves Mickey and Minnie’s adventure to save Alice from Maleficent, spanning five levels in a short game. Interestingly, the game wasn’t originally called a Mickey and Minnie Mouse game; the Famicom version was titled Mickey Mouse: Adventures in Wonderland. The main difference is that character sprites were replaced from Alice characters with Disney villains, and some items were modified. This isn’t a major issue regionally, but it would be great in the North American version to feature these foes from the Alice in Wonderland film. I don’t know, there might be some rights issues behind these changes, or I could be mistaken. If you are a Disney fan, you might like this game.

On letter F of RCEA2Z by @retrocollectiveeurope, we get a Sega Genesis game that doesn’t qualify as blast processing. I’m sure most people remember playing this from their childhood, but never loved it. Fantasia is based on the 1940s film produced by Walt Disney. You play as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Mickey Mouse, going through scenes from the movie, where you need to recover the musical Notes that are hidden in a certain number.

Apparently, the gameplay was meant to emulate Castle of Illusion, a great game made by Sega. Still, I felt the Fantasia game had the worst controls, with jumping at enemies feeling very clunky, and it seemed to have annoying flaws. So, if you’re a fan of the musical genre of film with the most beautiful composer and magical scenes, then this is what you get. It’s embarrassing.

Why would a company such as Infogrames release a game that should have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of this film? It feels like a botched version of what made the previous Mickey Mouse game good. According to a source I read, the development slipped, and Sega could have had the license to respect Disney’s wishes. The same animation company was furious with Sega, demanding that these 5.000 unsold copies be destroyed from sales. I’m not kidding. Even Roy E. Disney complained that the game would not succeed in adapting a classic film, which turned out to be a disaster. Yep, Disney knew it was bad. Of course, I would paraphrase how bad this game I’ve experienced, and it had a history of this sort of thing.

On letter D of RCEA2Z by @retrocollectiveeurope, we get Disney’s Classic Games Collection, which includes both Aladdin and The Lion King games on one disc. This is the initial 2019 release, before Digital Eclipse released a new version with the Super Nintendo version of Aladdin and added The Jungle Book game to all three versions via DLC.

I find it interesting that they released a newer version with extra content, but the one I had on the Xbox One version isn't all that good. I mean, it lacks the charm of movie-based games. Instead of putting the SNES version of Aladdin, they put the Genesis version, which, in my opinion, isn't very great. Even the Lion King game on the SNES rocks compared to the Genesis version, which has the worst soundtrack (again, my opinion). The portable games are completely pointless because they're a watered-down experience. The menus are pointless, the soundtracks skip during playback, and I anticipated a lot of behind-the-scenes content like other collections by Digital Eclipse. However, that’s not the case. I wasn't sure if they fixed the current version, and honestly, I highly doubt it.

So yeah, I’m not that impressed with this collection. If there's one thing Digital Eclipse could have included in this initial version, why not Toy Story games? Apparently, those are the only movie-licensed games I can think of. I don't know, but either way, if you're looking for a great compilation of Disney games, go check out Disney’s Afternoon Collection.
