Water first. Substrate second. 💧🌱

This is personally my favorite way to add substrate, especially for a no CO₂, no-filter aquarium.

I start with about 2 cm of water, then add the substrate directly into it. The water immediately traps most of the fine particles, instead of letting a cloud of dust spread everywhere.

I also don’t rinse my substrate, because I prefer to keep everything it contains rather than washing part of the fine material away.

Less dust. Less mess. Nothing wasted.

Just water first. 🌿

SAND NEST MAINTENANCE 🐜🏜️

One of the most important parts of maintaining a natural sand nest is keeping the right level of humidity.

I usually gently add water directly into the sand, allowing the moisture to slowly spread through the nest without flooding it.

Depending on the temperature, the colony size and how quickly the sand dries, I do this approximately once a week to every 10 days.

The goal isn’t to make the nest wet, it’s to create a stable humidity gradient so the ants can choose the conditions they need. 🐜
