As a player, I never understood why we were praised for shooting 80% in training yet 40% was the true in-game benchmark for a good shooter. If we truly believe practice is supposed to be harder than the game then we shouldn’t our training environment force us to shoot closer to 40% in practice? Maybe that’s the answer to take a 40% 3pt shooter to 45%.

I discussed this topic in a conversation with @coachjoeyburton a year ago. He challenged the idea that the way we train shooting needs to change. Months later, I studied over 2000 shots of Steph, Bane and Duncan to see what made elite shooters miss. After studying the numbers, I was surprised to find that only 17% of their shots were uncontested. I’d guess 90% of the shots I’ve taken in my life have been uncontested and I’d argue this is the case for most players. So if we’re hustling backwards then it’s likely we haven’t scratched the surface of shooting development. I studied what defenses are doing to shooters to reverse-engineer training. Don’t have it all completely thought out yet but I’m getting closer.

Ettore Messina explains his philosophy of using an open denial to shrink the floor and discourage triangle passes.

By denying with an open stance the defender is able to force catches higher up the floor while being able to plug driving lanes

It’s funny how I saw this implemented for years when I played but I never understood the logic behind. I thought it was a stylistic preference that was unique to European basketball.

The logic is clear and it makes sense given the situation he’s teaching from in the video

Every role in basketball asks you to show up a little differently.

You have some days where it’s sweats and sneakers.
Some days it’s a polo and trousers.
And every once in a while, the setting calls for something a little more elevated.

After more than a decade playing overseas, I definitely developed a greater appreciation for how people dress in different parts of the world. Not necessarily dressing up all the time but understanding that style can be simple, intentional and still feel like you.

I’m probably always going to lean casual. But I’ve learned there’s something to be said for dressing for the occasion.

PNR defense becomes more effective when you can disrupt something as small as a screening angle. Rerouting the screener disrupts timing, driving lines and offensive flow.

Dwane Casey emphasized the importance of initiating contact on the screener in drop and switch PNR coverages.

Ultimately, winning the battle early in the possession limits ways for the offense to attack which should keep the defense out of rotation

Tyrese Rice (@reserice.4) explained one of the real separators between higher-paid players in almost every basketball market.

| Adaptability |

Change is inevitable. Rosters change. Coaches change. Systems change. Roles change. Sometimes the opportunity you get is not the opportunity you expected

Your ability to adapt efficiently usually dictates your value. The money is not always tied to who has the most talent. A lot of times it’s tied to who can adjust w change and still help a team win

Washington Wizards Assistant Coach Cody Toppert (@topp33) shows his progression to a baseline Spanoulis action when 5 is in the corner during a 1-3 middle PNR.

He spoke a lot about layering reads and tactics from his offensive system into player development. Really enjoyed this @coaching_u clinic

Rejecting the PNR is probably the most effective action against any coverage. The reason is simple..

Defenses aren’t prepared for failure.

Ryan Pannone (@ryanpannone) explained that most coaches build their defense around what is supposed to happen. Even when they prepare for the possession breaking down, how much practice time are they really willing to allocate to those situations?

That’s why rejecting the PNR is often taught as the first read against almost any coverage. It disrupts the defense’s initial plan and changes rotations and responsibilities in a split second while creating immediate advantages for the offense.

Coach Pannone was elite at teaching, encouraging, and creating reject opportunities. His philosophy of rejecting with speed and violence consistently created rim pressure, fouls, and defensive breakdowns for us last season when executed correctly

Pannone has multiple ELITE clinics on @coaching_u that are worth watching šŸ“ŗ by @antgoods87

Maturity as a shooter is getting to the point where every shot feels the same once the ball gets to your shot pocket.

3pt success is largely psychological. There are players who feel much more pressure one step behind the line than one step in front of it. Just like players who mentally separate the difficulty of a movement three from a dribble three.

There may be real variance in difficulty depending on the shot but feeling like every shot is the same is a realization shooters can reach internally. Whether it is completely true or not, I believe that mindset can improve accuracy by minimizing anxiety.

NBA assistant coach Fred Vinson made a lot of points at the @coaching_u clinic that resonate for shooters at every level. Really good watch

Complacency hits most athletes at some point in their career. It’s almost like there’s an expiration on diligence once they hit certain milestones.

For some players it’s a 30 point game. For some it’s getting to the league or signing that contract with numbers they’ve never seen before. And for some it’s being ā€œclose enoughā€ like the practice squad example Brady is talking about.

Each milestone is paired with a new set of expectations. When your preparation and motivation don’t align with the opportunity is hard to sustain success by @antgoods87
