“Antler Twist” has cleared cobwebs and decompressed the narrowed vision and head pressure I’ve had working hard at high altitude.
You know I’m tinkering with 3-4 things at any time, but this maneuver works immediately so the scientific rigor can be set aside. And I’ve never felt this good above 9K feet 🏔️
With the Leadville 100 coming up soon, it’s unfair for me not to share this simple 6-breath reset to benefit my fellow runners -or anyone hiking up high this summer.
Try it out and report back; I’m always looking to refine things 🙏 We are the pioneers.
🏜️ For anyone close to Phoenix, looking to learn and embody this stuff, I’ll be there Aug 3-9th and extremely available to share. Also, there may be a few tickets left for the Lion’s Gate event with the @humangarage core team 👀 taken in The UltraHouse Durango Team by @anthonykunkel

Now clear after 3 years limited by pain, I’m most excited to watch an intervention like depth drops unfold over the next couple months.
You know when you take a weighted vest off and feel Great?! That’s PAP. Chasing PAP (post activation potentiation) never appealed to me as it wears off quickly. But what about leveraging tiny doses of depth drops (or vest warmups) most days to build some connective tissue and/or nervous system plasticity/bias? Couldn’t we solidify these thousands of reps where perceived effort was suddenly so much lower?
Subjectively, the ‘reward prediction error’ of not needing to warmup through a quarter mile of pain has made a massive difference, and now starting so many runs feeling like my feet are weightless has taken it to another planet 👼 taken in The UltraHouse Durango Team by @anthonykunkel

Morning or evening, the short half life of nicotine and the wide potential benefit for your head space is worth leveraging. By taking your minimum effective dose once every 3 days you’ll have zero tolerance.
For athletic goals, where do you start?
It’s handy to use the same number you would for hundreds of mg of caffeine, for mg of THC, mg of nicotine: 200 mg of caffeine gets you going? Or 2mg of THC is your preferred high? Then a 2mg lozenge of nicotine is probably your spot. Anywhere from 1-4mg, even daily shouldn’t establish tolerance, but we play it conservative here..
You might even dislodge some gunk in your system like @thedrardisshow suggests and that would really be something. But I’m just here to run with more joy 🤷 taken in Durango, Colorado by @anthonykunkel

Many athletes are running on a flat tire, accumulating mileage on top of dysfunction.
Elite ultra-runners combat dysfunction with elite training habits, preventing the low-pressure tire altogether.

@anthonykunkel — 2x ultra marathon champion, Durango, CO — is using the Hyper Stride Mode 1 to train joint integrity for pain free running....

In this demonstration, Mode 1 incorporates slight linear translation in the presence of rotation, potentiating the spiral muscle chain during the ground contact phase in a stride cycle. This type of stimulus is needed for natural stability and organization when encountering hundreds of miles of unpredictable terrain.

The measurable instability of the Hyper Stride produces results that hold up deep into the race, where most runners begin to experience mechanical failure.
Tag an ultra runner who needs to train the ground, not just the miles.

Along with probably 3-4 dozen other men, I’ll be aiming to run 5:11/mile, 3:13/km, 16:07/5k, or juuust under, for 26.2 miles so I can qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials in March 2028.
2:15:59 for a marathon
Lately, low-5 min/mile on the road has felt substantially more livable than ever. Plus, I’ve been able to do kilometer repeats again, after years without them -a magical stimulus for me, done substantially above sea level marathon output/wattage. See my other posts about fast running for more.
Vegas odds on me qualifying? Probably 50-50 right now.
It feels like a sign of enlightenment that I don’t need to lie to myself about the objective odds, nor take silly swings and blow up catastrophically, trying to be something I’m not.
50-50 is on the aggressive end of perfect odds for human play, to enter the flow channel, and I know that. I’ve had massive shifts since my last marathon.

First loser no matter how you see it 🤷
I’m still refining major things every time a race, so I’m content with my effort and performance.
I fell off the multi-rig for the first time, just didn’t take it seriously in the wetness, and I missed my spear, but I was also in No Man’s Land -dropped by the leaders and safe from the chase pack- so it didn’t really matter, outside my emotions and the official gap off the lead.
Awesome shots and none of the views expressed here by @joemartellophotography 😉

Without new sponsorship directly for obstacle racing, or proper elite invites from events to cover my travel, I don’t see taking OCR any more seriously than I currently do.
I have mixed feelings about this, and I’m not trying to sound whiny; I’m happy where I am, there are just some firm realities to doing this full time.

Peak age for competitors tends to get older and older and the race gets longer.
19-24ish for sprinters
25-30ish for marathon ish
30s for most sub-24 hour ultra events
40s for the real real long stuff
I’d like my swan song to Sri Chinmoy 3100 miler..

I’ve gotten off course. I know it’s an unfair “tax” on fast runners, and I’d love to still get credited for the wins -but we have a rule in the trail running world: you realize you’re off course, you go back to where you got off, you proceed from there. Or you quit, or accept a DQ.
If we didn’t have a rule already in place, a rule every athlete at the top knows well, then we could debate this, maybe Spartan could assign a time penalty, but not completing the course means you didn’t finish. Period. I got outran on the day, so I’m not wanting any formal correction in my favor, but I can’t respect an organization that doesn’t take responsibility for this. taken in Monroe, Washington by @anthonykunkel

Our season has built to the Spartan North American Champs this coming weekend, and I think we’re ready.
We both won the Montana Spartan Ultra back in May, reset and enjoyed the high country this summer, which involved plenty of training, now we’ve normalized podiums over the last few weeks.
From Anthony: I’ve never had a season of exclusively chasing course records. After years of processing pain out of my mechanics, I’m free. And I’ve run faster than anyone else in history at the Silverton Alpine 8 miler (~20 year old event weekend), Creede Mountain run (39th annual), and now @pietownpiefestival 3.14 miler up in the high desert (almost as old as Silverton Alpine). I’d be concerned trying to race me.
From Alyssa: I’m just happy to be involved 😂 but also watch out ‘cause I’m kinda fast rn 🤫⚡️ Silverton Alpine 8 miler 🥈• Creede Mountain Run 🥈 • Pie Town Pi-K (3.14 miles lol) 🥇 taken in Pie Town, New Mexico by @anthonykunkel

I’ve been testing these two side by side this season and here are my takeaways…
If you have questions, I’m currently working on getting someone from @themaralabs live this month to get into it, mostly focused on protocols for performance with a downstream bonus of seasonally detoxing microplastics, but inevitably some deeper dives into NRF2 activation and hormesis etc.
So lemme know what else the world needs to know in the comments👌 by @anthonykunkel

Let’s be clear, alcohol and caffeine are both Heavy drugs, so while I’ve accepted the censored of my microdosing protocols, I’m sharing my approach to a few substances this week.
In my case, winning happens but it’s a side effect of enjoying the performances and process more than ever. taken in Durango, Colorado by @anthonykunkel
