It’s been a few days now since the ‘Sea Level to 14er’ Challenge ended, and I’ve had time to reflect a bit.

I came into it with two intentions, one likely obvious, and one maybe not so obvious.

1:
Firstly, an intention was not only to learn academically about what breath training can do, but to FEEL it in action… on a mountain… at altitude. And ultimately, if the exercises that I did to train translated to the mountain, I’d feel comfortable sharing it with others to make ALTITUDE more ACCESSIBLE, especially for those not living at altitude or with resources for the expensive/fancy training equipment.

2:
The second intention is closer to my heart. When I was 9, I lost my uncle tragically in a kayaking accident. He was an incredible outdoor athlete who loved nature – I credit his spirit for breathing a passion for the outdoors into me today. I have very few of his old belongings, but one that I do is a large picture of the 14ers in Colorado (all ~54 of them). Next to each one that he climbed, he had a date marked – he made it to 14 summits in his too-short lifetime.

A few years ago, I set a goal to ‘finish’ the picture… I had no idea how, where, or when that would become a reality, but the universe took care of that for me. Mt. Bierstadt on Wednesday last week was the first step in that journey.

It was incredibly emotional and impactful to ‘stand where he stood’ (Bierstadt was one that he’d done before), looking at the snowy mountain-tops in the distance and feeling on the top of the world. Words don’t quite do it justice.

Here are a few photos of the journey.

From the bottom of my heart, a big thank you to all that made this possible. To name a few:
@jacko.david.Jackson for creating the training program and pushing me. You’re a special coach.
@traversefitness for your inspiring community. Everyone has a mountain.. And I got to climb mine last week.
And for those that supported the day-of the hike - you are the best @trailblazerwellness @rgiardina20 @kateswellness

Forbes official…? That’s pretty neat.

You know what else is neat? Nature. And adventure. And mindfulness. So, you should join us on a trip sometime.

And BIG thanks to @everettpotter for your writing and interest in our cause. It was an honor.

What actually challenges you above 6,000 meters?

Just wrapped up a great conversation with Martin Kysel, who summited #Aconcagua last season with @grajales.expeditions after completing the breathwork training with @recaltraining

We talked about the 14-hour summit push, respiratory muscle fatigue, managing breathlessness, and what surprised him most when the training met reality on the mountain.

If you’ve got a big climb coming up, there’s plenty here to chew on.

The first thing to fail on Aconcagua isn’t your legs.

It’s something else.... something most climbers never even think to train.

But these climbers get it. They’re working on it right there in the @grajales.expeditions tent at basecamp.

After working with hundreds of mountain athletes preparing for peaks like Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, and Kilimanjaro, @anthonylorubbio from @recaltraining noticed the same pattern over and over again:
→ Fit people struggling for reasons they couldn’t explain.

In his upcoming live workshop: “The Missing Piece in Your High Altitude Preparation”

…he’ll reveal what most expedition training plans leave out — and why it matters more than you think.

Most people only talk about their summits.
Almost no one talks honestly about their failed attempts.

That’s why we’re hosting a special livestream with Recal client Dave Taylor (@livefast_playhard) - a guy who went to Aconcagua his first time, but came home without the summit.

And then?
He went back — with a new approach, revamped training (@alpineathletics_), rebuilt his breathing mechanics (@recaltraining), and climbed with @grajales.expeditions — and stood on top of Aconcagua on his second attempt.

This is the stuff mountain athletes rarely get to hear:
- What actually went wrong the first time
- The mistakes he didn’t realize he was making
- Why his “pretty solid shape” still wasn’t enough for 22,800 ft
- The training shifts (including breathwork) that made the difference

And yes, we’ll have Q&A time at the end so you can ask Dave anything.

RSVP in the link in our stories — or manually go to Recal.training/#rsvp-live to register your spot.

See you tomorrow at 12 USA Eastern Time.

The 5 Breath Assessments Every Athlete Should Know

Body Oxygen Level Test Score:
What it measures: Your body’s automatic response to the feeling of breathlessness, and therefore how efficiently, especially biochemically (oxygen-carbon dioxide balance), you breathe.

CO2 Tolerance Test Score:
What it measures: Your body’s sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and breathing control under stress—keys for endurance and altitude performance.

Maximum Breathlessness Test:
What it measures: Yet again, your carbon dioxide tolerance, but also how well you can control your breathing under movement stress—essential for mountaineering and endurance training.

Location of Movement Test:
What it measures: Where your breath movement happens—chest, ribs, or belly—and whether you’re using the right mechanics to breathe most efficiently.

Range of Motion Test:
What it measures: How much your rib cage can expand and contract—which indicates the overall flexibility of your thoracic cavity and rib cage. Therefore, this is an informal gauge (without special equipment) of your lung capacity and ability to breathe mechanically-efficient.

Mountaineers: Understand this before you climb above 14,000 feet.

In our recent webinar “Breathwork Training for Mountaineers” at @climbingthesevensummits, @anthonylorubbio from @recaltraining goes into the reasons WHY you actually struggle for air at high altitude.

Watch this clip as he guides us into a closer look at the real reason—not the vague “there’s less oxygen” you often hear, but what’s happening around and inside you — that you struggle for air at high altitude.

From shifts in the partial pressure of oxygen (yes, it matters) to how your chemoreceptors detect those changes and ramp up your breathing rate in response—this is the essential physiology every high-altitude athlete should understand.

But also, you should know that just because breathing FASTER is automatic, does not mean it’s optimal — especially if you don’t have proper breathing mechanics or trained your respiratory muscles to handle this extra workload.

Give it a watch — and if you want to view the FULL webinar, go here: recaltravel.com/ctss.

If the science sparks something—or you want to learn more about how breathwork fits into all this—drop a comment and let’s keep the conversation going.

Learn a better way to breathe to recover.

If you want to recover more efficiently after a tough training session or an acclimatization hike during your expedition, this protocol embraces the science of blood biochemistry to improve your oxygen delivery.
-> First into your blood,
-> then into your muscles.

This is especially important at high altitude where this can be a major challenge given low oxygen saturation levels (typically).

What You’ll Learn in This Video:

1. How to do Recovery Breathing: Step by step

2. Why it works: The science behind oxygen delivery and the CO2/pH balance

3. When to use it: After tough workouts, acclimatization hikes, and during altitude expeditions

The Recovery Breathing method combines elements of controlled hyperventilation (oxygen into blood) and Breathe Light (oxygen out of blood and into muscle or organ tissue) to optimize oxygenation and speed up recovery.

Try it out, and let us know how it works for you in the comments!

Breathe better. Recover faster. Perform stronger.
