Toni Morrison: Flight
Freedom Quilt: Bow Tie
Ceramic vessels
2026

Young’s ceramic vessels draws inspiration from Grotesque
jars and face jugs, focusing on their historical
legacy as functional vessels, grave markers for
enslaved ancestors, and sacred objects used to ward
off evil. While these jugs were traditionally thought
to be self-portraits, Young’s vessels represent both
himself and other individuals in his life, such as
his mother and close friends who provide him refuge
and the space to be his full self.

A recurring icon in Young’s work is the rock dove, a
creature that defies displacement and refuses to let
others dictate its presence. Central to Young’s
visual language is the color blue, which he uses as a
literal and conceptual extension of Blackness—evoking
skin so deep it takes on a luminous blue hue, while
also connecting to water and the cosmos.

Young’s vessel “Toni Morrison: Flight” converses with
Toni Morrison’s insistence on the conjuring of flight
in Song of Solomon and Imani Perry’s brilliant usage
of the bluejay. In reflection with the usage of salt
as a material that can weigh you down, Young’s work
insists otherwise.

Come witness Anthony’s work in our current exhibit, Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies!
Dates: August 8th - September 6th (viewing on the weekends and by appointment)

From Sip Curation:

Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies, a first presentation in an evolving inquiry! A three-artist exhibition on place, memory, and the practice of getting well.

In conversation with Toni Cade Bambara’s 1980 novel, The Salt Eaters, spiritual in form and political in tone, the exhibition asks a question the novel poses in its opening line: “Are you sure, sweetheart, that you want to be well?” Like the material and rememory of salt, Black Spiritual Ecologies as a framework layers Black spiritual meaning-making across past, present, and future ecologies. It invites artists and audiences alike into collaboration with materiality, placemaking, storytelling, and the global political conditions of Black life.

Focusing on the pillar of place, each artist converses with the history and spiritual making of a place/places; whether on the ground or in the air. All places that refuse to be forgotten. As a collective story, the artists represent the layering of mediums as a methodology for meaning making. Individually, each artist’s work represents methods for getting well; through flying, portals, or community remembrance, Black life is honored.

OPENING THURSDAY, JULY 9TH—“Anthony Peyton Young | From the Ground Up.” Artist reception: Thursday, July 9th, 6-8 PM.
—
CLAMP is proud to announce “From the Ground Up,” an exhibition of recent ceramic sculptures and drawings by Anthony Peyton Young—his second with the gallery. Merging historic Southern craft traditions and contemporary explorations of identity, Young employs humor and caricature both to dismantle received stereotypes and to explore how those same stereotypes may contribute to the formation of subjectivity.
—
Young’s ceramic vessels, like his paintings and drawings, mine American culture, particularly representations of Blackness, to forge new considerations of how we see ourselves and each other. His figures, more fully realized than just faces, draw upon tropes we know from popular entertainment and daily life.
