It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years.

The entire world lived through September 11th, but being a child in New York that day is something I’ll never be able to fully explain.

I remember watching the world seemingly freeze in real time. Being pulled out of school. Hearing fears that schools could be targeted next. Living on Long Island, directly under major flight paths, and suddenly looking at every plane in the sky differently. As a kid, it was terrifying.

And when you have friends who lost loved ones that day, it becomes even more personal.

There are also so many stories of people we knew who were supposed to be in Manhattan that morning, but for one reason or another, simply weren’t. Those stories still give me chills. My grandmother lived so close to the World Trade Center, yet that morning she happened to be in Queens, a place she almost never went. Twenty five years later, I still think about how one seemingly insignificant decision that morning changed everything for so many people.

I’ll never forget my father not skipping a beat and rushing toward the city to help however he could, bringing food and supplies to those who needed them. That has always stayed with me.

What makes it even more surreal is knowing that just two years earlier, I had stood inside those towers and looked out over New York from the observation deck. As a child, you never imagine that something so permanent could simply be gone.

And now, 25 years later, watching the footage all over social media hits incredibly hard. Every year, it seems like another photograph, another video, another angle from that morning surfaces. Something I’ve never seen before. And suddenly, I’m that kid in New York again. You remember exactly how that day felt.

Twenty five years later, I still have trouble comprehending it.

I’ll never forget the people we lost, the families whose lives changed forever, or the way New Yorkers came together in the days that followed.

For those of us who were there, September 11th isn’t only something we remember. It’s something we still feel.
