God gave me a gift that took 30+ years to unwrap an understand.

That gift was PAIN.

Pain is a gift that pushes you to solve problems beyond your current capabilities, which allows you to live a life beyond your current situation.

You have to lean into the pain, not avoid it, to find the gifts awaiting you. Something I did for years even though all I wanted to do at times was run and hide.

Our lives are riddle with hardship and the best way to make them worthwhile is to commit to finding solutions to make us better for ourselves and those around us.

Another gift I was given was the understanding that sharing my hardships, not matter how ugly, can help others avoid the same headaches.

When I’m blessed to be on a stage I’m not up there for me. I’ve already run the race and crossed a finish line.

I’m up there for you.

Showing you how to run that race faster and easier.

How to do the DARK WORK necessary to shine brighter in the light of your life.

And I’m not special. ANYONE can do what I do and leave an enduring positive impact on people’s lives.

I pray the 11,000+ people I spoke to over the last 5 days on 3 stages go on to have an AMAZING year of earned pride and confidence through struggle.

Don’t run from the hardships life is presenting to you. Lean into them and find the gritty solution your life needs.

It may not seem like it in this moment, but its a powerful gift waiting for you to open it.

Yesterday an interesting chapter came full circle.

I had the honor of speaking to the @oregonfootball team in Eugene during an event held to provide the athletes with activities and insights that could set them up successfully on and beyond the field.

I played my last game as a Duck 16 years ago and while I was there we periodically had people come and speak to us to plant seeds of inspiration to be/play our best.

In those moments you never realize that some day it may be you doing the same. However the only way it’s possible is by applying, over a LIFETIME, the teachings the previous speakers shared with you.

I’m thankful I did and was able to bring those lessons, and many of my own, back to the Ducks team. Can’t wait to see who applies them and how they do it on and off the field.

It’s now time for them to do their own @darkwork and see what life can become.

Anthony Trucks was on the fast track to becoming a young star in the NFL. 🏈 But when Anthony’s dark past caught up with him, it nearly destroyed everything he’d worked so hard for. 😱 How did Anthony persevere? Most people take everything that goes wrong in their life and make it abject failure.
ㅤ
End of the world.
ㅤ
I can't be loved.
ㅤ
It'll never work out.
ㅤ
Two things happen when you size it that way.
ㅤ
1️⃣ You have no lessons to extract, because you won't learn there and it's too painful to look at.
ㅤ
2️⃣ You never try that thing again, so you never even see if you could get better at it in the long run.
ㅤ
I used to teach failure as six different levels.
ㅤ
At the top is abject failure.
ㅤ
Below that is structural failure, where something big took place, it's not completely done, it can be fixed, but it's really hard.
ㅤ
Then glorious failure, where the thing just blew up and you watch it burn and walk away.
ㅤ
The problem is that when those three happen, most of us call it unfixable and look away.
ㅤ
Underneath those sits what I call the learning line, and everything below it you learn from.
ㅤ
Common failure is the one you apologize for, my bad, sorry, but I learned the lesson so I don't do it again.
ㅤ
Version failure is this version of me or this attempt didn't work out, what did I learn, let's go try it again.
ㅤ
The bottom and most important one is expected failure.
ㅤ
When I played football, I went to the field expecting to fail at something to get feedback and get better.
ㅤ
So when somebody tells me I made a mistake, I'm not shutting down over it.
ㅤ
It's the same miss either way.
ㅤ

I know people who invested nothing who are further along than the ones who bought everything.

The problems people bring me almost always sound the same.
ㅤ
They invested in the programs, joined the courses, went to the seminars, took copious notes.
ㅤ
Six months later the notebook hasn't been reopened and the goal still isn't realized.
ㅤ
They got the information.
ㅤ
They just didn't do something with it.
ㅤ
That separation between information and action is an identity issue, not a knowledge issue.
ㅤ
Some people cannot learn a thing and not do it.
ㅤ
Others feel satiated and comfortable with the fact that they now know it.
ㅤ
Knowing it is not the key piece.
ㅤ

About 25% of my day is work I'm genuinely excited about.
ㅤ
The other 75% is stuff I don't love doing.
ㅤ
There's a purpose to the individual piece and a purpose to the long form piece.
ㅤ
Some things fill me up right now, like creating the content, doing the thing, coaching the client.
ㅤ
Then there are bigger long term purposes that require me to do something I don't want to do to meet the goal I want.
ㅤ
If I enter that thing thinking I hate this, I don't want to do it, and I bring that energy, I get nothing out of it.
ㅤ
But if I go in knowing that doing this brings me closer to my desire, to my goal, to my purpose, then you submit to the difficulty of it.
ㅤ
It's the price of admission for what you want.
ㅤ
The hard part is showing up for the 75% on the mornings you don't feel like it, which is why I do a 7 minute motivational podcast every morning delivered straight to your phone, the kind of real talk your best friend won't even tell you.

The stage, ironically, is the smallest part of being a speaker.
ㅤ
I think when people see me for an hour in front of the room, they assume that's the job.
ㅤ
My speeches roll off my tongue now. I can throw in some jokes and stride from one side of the stage to the other.
ㅤ
It's like an iceberg: everyone sees what's above the water and nothing below it. They don't see the work behind the scenes, and they certainly don't witness all the little (and big) reps.
ㅤ
Sometimes the rep comes in the form of a camera and a couple of lights. I look crazy, talking to a lens with nobody else in the room.
ㅤ
Many of you have put in the time on stage and walked away without a paycheck. Chalk it up to exposure. And many of you are putting in the time behind the scenes too.
ㅤ
But there's a strategy that gets you paid for the speaking gigs. Plenty of speakers I talk to want more stages and fewer reps on camera. I hate to tell you this, but I just don't think it works that way.
ㅤ
