Last year, James and I happened to stumble upon @plexiartshop_ while exploring Sparta. The company based in Sparta, Greece, has spent decades refining the way artwork can be translated and presented through plexiglass, working with more than 130 museums around the world.

When we first walked into the shop, we met Sam and Paschalis, who greeted us with so much love and joy. We instantly connected with them. They’re also the reason we ended up stumbling upon the shipwreck in Gythio later that same day, so that chance encounter really catapulted this beautiful relationship that we’ve stayed connected to ever since.

This year, we made sure to go back to visit.

While we were there, we noticed these beautiful works combining stone and plexiglass throughout the shop. They were made by @george.tilelis , Paschalis’s father and the founder of Plexiglass Shop, who has spent decades working in the industry throughout Greece. He is also a fine artist, and much of the artwork throughout the space is his.

George happened to walk in while we were there, and with Sam translating for me, since my Greek is still pretty minimal, I had the chance to sit and talk with him about his work. There was something incredibly inspiring about being across from another artist who has been working practically his entire life and still carries that same passion and obsession for making art. We exchanged laughs, ideas, and words of wisdom.

Sam also took James and me through their production studio and introduced us to the people behind the work. We saw their screen-printing process, the machines, the cutting and refining of the plexiglass, and the many hands involved in making each piece. Everything is done with such intention and an incredible level of craftsmanship.

It was one of those experiences that reminded me how much I love seeing where art, craft, and process meet, and how a chance encounter can turn into a lasting friendship and source of inspiration.

The last slide is one of their pieces designed by Sam, featuring the mati, an iconic symbol deeply rooted in Greek culture.
