There’s something particularly enjoyable about a fantasy that doesn’t completely abandon the world it is built on. Unexpected Magic, the first book in the Many Kinds of Magic series, takes the Regency era and asks a simple but fascinating question: what if magic had always been real?

I really liked Delia as a protagonist. She isn’t the kind of character who needs to constantly prove that she’s special. She’s practical, intelligent, caring, and incredibly capable, even though the society around her keeps reminding her that she lacks the one thing that supposedly matters most: magic.

And I think that’s what made her journey so interesting to me.

The Regency setting also works really well with the magical elements. Magic isn’t just something that exists in the background it affects everything from family status and inheritance to marriage and social expectations. The dragons, unicorns and different kinds of magical abilities make the world fun, but there’s also a surprisingly strong social structure underneath it all.

I especially enjoyed the relationship between Delia and Jasper. Their dynamic feels like it develops through who they are as people rather than simply because the story needs a romance. Jasper has his own struggles with his magic and expectations, while Delia has spent so long being underestimated. Watching those two worlds come together was one of my favourite parts.

There’s also something really charming about the way the book balances the absurdity of magical creatures with the very proper world of the Regency era. A dragon causing chaos around a manor somehow feels completely at home here. 😂

Overall, Unexpected Magic gave me that feeling I look for in fantasy a world that feels like it has existed long before I opened the book, with its own rules, history and social order.

It’s magical, romantic, occasionally funny, and underneath all of that, it has a lot to say about expectations, class, identity, and being underestimated.

Definitely a fun read if you enjoy historical fantasy with romance and a little bit of the unexpected. ✨📚 by @antibrainrot.reader

I didn’t expect to get this attached to a cat who spends half the book stealing everyone’s food. 😭

Some cats are easy to love.

Gino makes you work for it. 😂🐈

He steals food, causes chaos, gets jealous, and somehow still manages to become one of those characters you can’t stop thinking about.

What I loved most is that this isn’t really about a “perfect” pet. It’s about the messy, funny, completely unexpected ways animals become part of our lives.

And somewhere between all the chaos, Gino stops feeling like a cat in a book…

and starts feeling like someone you’re going to miss.
