Day 2 of Open House Chicago, and we’ve got 127 years of history under one roof.

Anti-Cruelty has been part of Chicago since 1899, but one of the most distinctive chapters in our story came in 1979, when renowned Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman designed our shelter entrance. His work brought architectural character to a building with a very important job: helping animals find their way to a new beginning.

This 10-year-old sweetheart is smart, polite on leash, and absolutely NOT going anywhere without her trusty toy bone. Seriously. That thing goes everywhere she goes.

Before we were a stop on Open House Chicago, the neighborhood was home to another Chicago landmark: Michael Jordan’s Restaurant, right next door.

MJ’s served up food, sports, and plenty of @chicagobulls era nostalgia from 1993 to 1999. These days, you can visit us next door and discover a different piece of Chicago history: Anti-Cruelty’s basset hound-shaped entrance, designed by architect Stanley Tigerman in 1979.

Tigerman brought a sense of humor to architecture. We think a giant basset hound is a pretty good way to welcome people through our doors, especially when our mission is all about helping pets and the people who love them.

Visiting for Open House Chicago today? Come see for yourself. And while you’re here, say hello to the animals who are still waiting to meet their people.
