Welcome to the October 2026 ANTIGRAVITY—

We open with a riff on time, enter charming and balanced Libra season, remove smelly stains from our sofas, exorcise our disdain for the paranormal, grieve and recover from pregnancy loss, and endorse (controlled) flamethrowing in our gardens. @musicculture504 suggests stewardship over citations for a healthier French Quarter, @janeplace_communitylandtrust works to stop the slumlord vampires from sucking our money away, and @altscenenola says farewell to No Dice. Our Close Encounters this month includes a curious librarian at @palsloungenola and more (send us your own close encounters through our ANONYMOUS Google form (link in bio) or at closeencounters@antigravitymagazine.com, a place for missed connections. All email addresses will remain confidential. Don’t be a creep).

Senior Editor Mary Beth Campbell reports on local HIV activists and the victories of Act 177; Co-EIC @marisaclogher examines the power behind the Public Service Commission; @sabrinastonemusic wrangles a few members of @lsdclownsystem to discuss how they let everyone in on the fun; and our annual coverage of the New Orleans Film Festival returns for the fest’s 37th year.

This month’s cover is by @mogihead, back cover and centerfold by @daltonspanglerlivephotos. Scoop a copy around town or head to our Big Cartel site (linked in bio) to order a subscription, a copy, or even some merch to be delivered as a special treat right to your door. Happy Halloween! by @antigravitymag

The Public Service Commission regulates our energy, water, gas, phones, and even towing companies, and are supposed to negotiate fair and safe usage of utilities for the people of Louisiana. Made up of five members who serve six-year terms, public service commissioners each represent more people than a congressman. And while these officials wield immense power, we do get to choose them.

Remember, if you wait until you are entirely certain, you will stay right where you are while the years go by.

I’m not asking you to believe in ghosts. I’m suggesting that you might want to try and get comfortable with the fact that some of the people you care about are going to believe some things you think are absurd. And if you can learn to let them be wrong without needing to rescue them from their wrongness, I’ll bet you’ll find your life is going to get a lot quieter. Maybe even more peaceful.

For many across Louisiana, the 2026 state legislative session was overwhelming and disheartening. Amidst the chaos, however, there were a few victories, including the passage of Act 177, which updates Louisiana’s HIV criminalization law—famously one of the most restrictive and punitive in the United States—to reflect modern scientific knowledge around HIV transmission.

While some of the elements of time may be treated like a vapor or wet noodle around here, one extremely important exception to that is your time, Dear Reader. We always try to treat it like the priceless jewel that it is. It’s the most precious resource we all have, and it’s the ultimate duty of the ANTIGRAVITY crew to respect it.

The planets are asking this Libra season: How are we navigating our place within a corrupt system without being swayed to complacency or escapism?
