Kyoto is a different Japan. This quiet place strikes you with a renewed sense of what simplicity is. The best of just about anything is within your grasp, yet its effortless availability creates a paradox of a mystical mundane. You walk forever, seeing something new at every step, and you see before you a transformation of the world as you know it, into something new and even more beautiful than you ever thought possible. It’s moments like this we need to cherish, for they only last so long. We’re really lucky when we or someone we love isn’t suffering. We might as well make the most of it. Time itself is whatever we make of it, and we’re most free are when we’re lost in the fleeting eternity of a moment. (3/?) taken in Kyoto, Japan by @antilimiter

Kansai Airport is on an artificial island and a train takes for what feels like eternity to get to central Osaka. But of course it does, it has to when 9 million people live in an area covering 2000 km². As you wander through labyrinthine streets, the vastness is imposing yet at the same time you feel tall because almost everyone and most buildings, aren’t. There are actually 37 skyscrapers over 150m, but spread out across the massive prefecture, you barely notice. Bringing order to what should be chaos, an unmistakable Japanese design aesthetic is omnipresent, everything so thoughtfully put together and clean. Packed shopping streets seem to go on forever. Innumerable side streets hide 8-seat restaurants, air thick with cigarette smoke, serving beer in wooden mugs and food like nothing you’ve ever tasted, while some streets seem to have nothing going on at all. Even surrounded by so much, it’s easy to understand why so many people feel so alone. Are we good at finding order in chaos because it gives us something else to think about? I think so. It was about one month ago that I got home from a trip that changed everything. My first stop: Hong Kong. Balanced. Vast. Claustrophobic. And alive. Lamborghinis next to Ferraris parked by teenagers at Causeway Bay Plaza. Half future-metropolis-dystopia, half just any other city. It was alien. It was oddly familiar too. There was something else that stood out, a vibrance and pace that took your breath away. Yet in awe of it all, I remained firmly on solid ground. I felt like I was in the future. I felt like I was home. And the food was amazing. So as you process what you see and maybe the caption too, stop and think. Life is happening to us right now. Let it wash over you like a sea of people how far behind we are, how much work there is to do, and the near-infinite potential that comes with realizing this truth. Are we doing our best? Maybe, only to the extent that we’re willing to be uncomfortable. Then I went to Japan, and it only got better. (1/?) taken in Hong Kong by @antilimiter
