Slowly coming back on images to last spring, with some glimpse and glimmers of Invocations 💫

Invoking beings and forces from the past, present and futures, transgressors and dissident creatures, we invited artists to reflect upon what sounds means to them personally and to us collectively, taking over the CarWash space in London after dark, for an evening of poetry, performance and sound experimentation. Thank you so so much @nsasi_ug @antimasscollective @francis_w_c @puer_deorum for making this moment so magical and charged.

Invocations was the first chapter of ‘The Underworld Archives’, a series of events reflecting on the role of oral transmission and storytelling of sonic trans non binary communities as a form of activism, a tool for coming together and learning. We are currently dreaming and working towards the second chapter.

Core member of the Nyege Nyege collective @nyegenyegefest , and co-founder of @antimasscollective , Nsasi @nsasi_ug is a fearless sound sculptor operating outside borders and restrictions, weaving high-intensity sets that blend hard drum, Singeli, gqom, electro, noise, East African traditional sounds and club textures. With fearless mixing and an unpredictable approach to rhythm, every set is a live journey, navigating through radically different tempos and genres.

For 𝕀𝕟𝕧𝕠𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤, Nsasi will perform a free-flow experimental set, diving into a journey across the restless textures of their sonic universe ✨

“When heat is generated by bodies coming together around sound, something very powerful happens, that goes beyond just dancing; it opens up the possibility of grounding, of energy exchange and resistance. It’s as if a ritualistic space unfolds, where music becomes both a vessel and tool for resilience of individual yet collective journeys”.

The origin story of ANTI-MASS (@antimasscollective) is as simple as four friends trying to create “a place for ourselves where we could host parties, play the music, and bring a crowd that we felt would gel in interesting ways.”

“There used to be a lot of parties in Kampala,” Gerald continues, though there came a point where they wanted to cultivate experimental club music from “artists doing really interesting things.” So much of what they produced was music that combined the sounds of traditional Ugandan folk and underground queer nightlife, filtered through a deconstructed club lens. And with most of their work projecting an “unpredictable,” “evasive,” and almost paranoid quality, almost every ANTI-MASS release is produced in a way that makes it easy to understand what it’s been like to exist a queer Ugandan.

Nsasi’s uncompromising club music is born out of a necessity beyond simply making people dance. It is a beacon for shared worldviews, and a symbol of resilience. The Ugandan DJ and producer co-founded their own collective and label, @antimasscollective, in 2018 and began to throw parties that sought to create safe, celebratory spaces for their community in Kampala. ⁠
⁠
The early ANTI-MASS parties were halcyon moments of self-expression for an LGBTQ+ community that has been heavily stigmatised, marginalised and oppressed in Uganda for decades. ⁠

“We knew what and who we didn’t want in the space, and, literally, the music itself helped with creating that environment because having a specific sound kept specific people out,” Nsasi says. “[The music] is meant to attract an open-minded energy, because you’re coming into this heavily experimental space and you expect to feel something and to have fun.”⁠

Here Nsasi highlights seven artists and organisations uplifting marginalised groups in Uganda. ⁠

Our friends over at FAMACE need your urgent support. FAMACE is a trans-founded, Kampala-based grassroots collective offering living / community space to trans and queer people in need of it. Unfortunately their Healing Studio and Living Space was raided by the police earlier this year. This fund aims to assist them to relocate to a more secure location.
