We stand in solidarity with the Havasupai Tribe.

“Tribal members and millions of visitors each year are now impacted by the operation of the mine and the hauling of the ore. Shame on EFRI, and those who were not brave enough to do what is right and necessary.

We will not give up we owe that ancestors our children and the generations to come we will fight on.”

This afternoon, the New Mexico State Land Office prohibited new uranium leasing on state trust lands, banning uranium mines on over 13 million acres of land.

The executive order signed by Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard follows years of pressure from community members and advocates, and linked to opposition to recent proposed exploration near Canjilon and continued opposition to proposed projects on Mount Taylor.

New Mexico is the U.S.’s largest historic producer of uranium ore. Over 1,100 legacy sites are littered across the state, including 250 abandoned mines with no plan of action for reclamation or remediation. This is a massive step for New Mexico and an encouraging sign for further traction at the state legislative level. taken in Santa Fe, New Mexico by @antiuraniummappingproject

From September 9th to October 3rd, I’ll be spending nearly a month on the road, primarily based in New York, as I continue building relationships and opportunities around the Anti-Uranium Mapping Project.

I’ll begin by working with Indigenous New York Fashion Week, then remain in the region to edit and continue developing AUMP while taking part in Climate Week and connecting with people working across Indigenous rights, environmental justice, and climate advocacy. From there, I’ll attend a the Western Mining Action Network Biennial Conference in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada before traveling to the University of Texas at Austin for a panel discussion related to my work.

“The (WMAN) Conference will convene 150-200 people from Indigenous and mining-affected communities, and allies working in legal aid, scientific support, and environmental NGO’s for cross-cultural knowledge sharing, elevating Indigenous voices, leadership development, and training in environmental advocacy and democratic organizing.” -WMAN

While these opportunities take me outside of New Mexico, they are directly connected to the larger direction of AUMP. The project is increasingly becoming an international platform for connecting photography, community knowledge, environmental history, mapping, and conversations around extractive industries. Being present in these spaces allows me to share the project, build relationships, learn from others doing related work, and create opportunities for future collaborations.

I’m raising travel funds to help cover the basic costs of being away for nearly a month: food, local transportation, conference fees, and care for my dog, Dibé, while I’m gone. I’m looking to fund just the practical costs that make it possible for me to accept these opportunities and keep the work moving.

Funds raised will help cover 25 days of travel:
$625 — food ($25/day)
$225— local transportation ($9/day)
$205 — conference fees
$750— dog care ($30/day)

This month gives me a rare opportunity to do a lot of work in a short amount of time. If you’re able to contribute, even a small amount will help make it possible for me to be there.

Finally beginning to collect myself since our August 15th event at Relay here in Santa Fe. It was a crazy push to make it happen but it once again exceeded my expectations. I’ve been enjoying the format of these events as they evolve and take shape with every location.

The evening started with laying the foundation of AUMP along with the history of uranium mining on the Navajo Nation. Guest speaker, Associate Professor University of Arizona, Andrew Curley was able to speak to land reform and the policies that keep outdated practices in place.

I’ve also been testing out different approaches to Counter-Mapping depending on the environment and I was so deeply moved to see how many people contributed such deep and reflective responses to the prompt.

Music played throughout the evening to provide some easeful energy in hopes of balancing out the heavy topics we came together to address. Thank you to SXQ @vivaciousvibrations , @diatom.deli , @houseology1 and heavy hitter @eyedotjay for holding it down. Live visual projections were provided by the best A/V crew, @nmvideolab

The cherry on top was birthday enchiladas and sides provided by Posa’s. 🎈🙏

I’d like to send a HEUGE thank you out to our group of volunteers… Aviva, Joel, Celeste, Juna, Quinn, Marissa, Ben, Ryan, Grayson and Sacred Water Mountain Collective. But again, NONE of this would be possible if it weren’t for these two actual angels, @eeeeeeeeerin and @rainstick_ . To be able to create a portal into my dreams where we collaborate and navigate this terrain together to create something beyond my wildest dreams is truly a prayer answered by the Universe.

After going through our collected sales from the raffle, zines, door tickets, 3 Sisters Collective, and local donors, we were able to raise $5,972. After paying off overhead costs to bring this event to light, we have $1,757.41 to help support me with a living wage to continue this work full-time.

On that note… look out for our next post about upcoming travels to NY to pick up where I left off as we work towards DISMaNTiLinG NUcLear PoWeR with @wjtstudio

I’m finally collecting myself after being fully immersed in the vibrant art scene of El Paso and Juarez this past weekend thanks to the amazing support of @carofraa. I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to reconnect this work with its broader community despite our politically imposed boundary.

Thank you @sanluis.contemporaneo for providing an opportunity to unite the ongoing struggle and history of Church Rock, NM, Sierra de Juárez, MX, and Sierra Blanca, TX, with organizations like the International Ecologist Alliance of the Bravo, the Binational Coalition Against Toxic and Radioactive Dumps, and @lasierradejuarez who are working to document the ongoing impact of resource extraction and the dumping of toxic waste through counter-mapping. By amplifying our relationship to ancestral landscapes we change the narrative of “middle of nowhere” and “no man’s land” through spatial histories, forcing these companies to question what they thought they knew. I look forward to future collaborations among land protectors as we work to remind everyone of how these land divisions were placed upon us during territorial acquisition as we collectively work to instill a renewed sense of stewardship for the land. 📍⛰️📝⚡️
