Creative ideas can change lives. I truly believe that. It’s why I trained to do what I do. It’s also why I’ve been working every waking hour this week with an incredible non-profit in Toronto.

In just 7 days, we managed to go from Toronto City Council ordering Ryan Donais, Founder of Tiny Tiny Homes, to stop building emergency shelters for the homeless and remove them from the city park, to the City Council now looking to engage in more productive conversations, and work with the organisation to help more vulnerable people impacted by Toronto’s homelessness emergency.

The reactive ‘Show Some Love For Our Homeless’ public advocacy campaign, which asked the City Council to choose compassion over enforcement, created significant support on social media, with the story being covered by all major local and national media networks and publications, and over 27,000 signatures on change.org in less than 48 hours.

It was no mean feat, and every second counted, but we hit our campaign goals and got the public support and immediate outcome we needed.

Shout out and thank you again to @lozoz Laura Osborne for helping me with posters and social posts, to @conor.rand Conor Fitzgerald for his speedy legal counsel, and to Amelea Sutherland for pulling this all together, from putting up hearts and posters to manning the YouTube Channel.

To sign the petition, head to change.org/tinytinyhomes

To follow our progress, it’s @tinytinyhomestoronto on Instagram, @tinytinyhomes on TikTok, and @tinytinyhomes on YouTube.

Shout out to the rest of the Tiny Tiny Homes team for having faith and backing this. I don’t have you all on here so let me know who else I need to tag @lyle.insurancegroup @bosslyle

If you’re going to work at the weekend, it helps to have something nice to look at while you question your life choices.

Freelancers/self-employed people, how’s your “flexible working” going?

There aren’t many people a drag queen and a Southern Baptist might both claim as one of their own. Dolly Parton somehow managed it.

A piece on trust, shared values, audience complexity and why disagreement doesn’t always have to mean disconnection.

Thanks to PRWeek for featuring it as their top story today.

A little something I wrote in memory of Dolly Parton for @abcaustralia exploring what she seemed to understand about identity, belonging and connecting with people who don’t necessarily see the world the same way:

Jason Arday was right. Society has lost its way. And this week, it lost another good human.

What happened to Jason exposes just how toxic parts of our media, and increasingly our society, have become.

An autistic Black man was relentlessly scrutinised, picked apart and publicly shamed, while privileged white men survive far worse and retain their careers, platforms, wealth and influence.

We cannot seriously pretend everybody is treated equally. They are not. Evidently.

This is systemic racism and prejudice.

We’ve seen the same unethical journalism repeatedly target and villainise Black people, Muslims, migrants, LGBTQ+ and Trans+ people, people with disabilities and victims of domestic violence.

Too often, “freedom of speech” is used to excuse barbaric witch-hunts.

And time and time again, it’s the same names: The Daily Mail, The Sun, The Telegraph, The Times and GB News.

There are devastating human consequences, but very little accountability. Maybe an apology tucked away in the small print. Until the next time.

Then, we post. We protest. We complain. Yet little changes.

There is more we can do.

Your attention is their revenue. Your engagement is their revenue. Choosing not to click is power.

For those working in advertising, marketing and media, our choices go further.

If your brand advertises with a publication that repeatedly produces this kind of “journalism”, your money helps fund the organisation producing it.

We cannot celebrate commitments to diversity and inclusion while funnelling media budgets into organisations with histories of prejudicial and divisive journalism.

Disengaging is power. Divesting your media spend is power. Having difficult conversations with colleagues, bosses and clients is power.

If asking the media to change hasn’t worked, perhaps it’s time to stop paying them not to.
