My first time visiting Nuccio's Nursery

Early last Friday, after volunteering @altadenatalks, with @antoinetteiam to clear vegetation, I learned that Jim Nuccio of Nuccio’s Nurseries had generously provided water and Gatorade for our volunteers.

Later, Toni took me around Dena, and we stopped at the nursery near Chaney Trail, off Loma Alta Drive. Although I knew about the business, I had never visited. Jim welcomed us and showed us around.

I mentioned to Jim that I knew about Dr. Kristen Ochoa’s successful work @chaney.trail.corridor to preserve this special part of Altadena. I also shared that she was recently honored for her efforts as one of Altadena’s Sweetest People.

Walking through the property, I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere, like being in the desert and at a zoo. We passed about three dozen beautiful palm trees still scorched from the Eaton Fire and later came across a burned oak tree. I was surprised I hadn’t seen images of this part of the property before, and if I had, I didn’t remember them.

Toni was immediately drawn to the burned oak, seeing art in the way the fire had transformed it. She also got excited when she spotted an olive tree.

I later learned the property is 78 acres. Only about six acres are cultivated nursery grounds, while 65 acres are undeveloped wildland stretching into the foothills. It made sense why exploring the property felt so different from the Altadena I knew growing up.

I also learned that Nuccio’s goes way back. Founded in 1935, the family moved the nursery to Chaney Trail in Altadena in 1946. Over the decades, they introduced more than 200 new camellia varieties, becoming known internationally and an important part of Altadena’s horticultural history.

Toni joked that Jim should start giving tours, and I agreed. It was a cool way to experience another side of Altadena.

Even after growing up in Dena, I’m still discovering places and stories I never knew. It reminds me of what has always made Dena so special. taken in Altadena, CA by @antoinetteiam

Such an honor to be asked to be part of Susana's rebuild by being asked to pray, write scriptures on her studs, anoint with oil and worship inside this stage of the build.
As I was coming down the stairs, God told me to write, Psalm 37:23 on them: The STEPS of a GOOD man are ordered of the Lord! Congratulations Susana! 🙌🏾 by @antoinetteiam

Volunteering pays off in more ways than expected.

Antoinette “Toni” Bailey-Raines is an Altadena native, U.S. Air Force veteran, and community advocate @altadenatalks. Following the Eaton Fire, which destroyed the homes of her parents and sister, Toni founded the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Initiative, providing free vegetation removal and property cleanup throughout the community.

I’ve gotten to know Toni and Altadena Talks in different ways over the past year. I regularly tune in to the Altadena Talks podcast, which makes me laugh and offers candid perspectives you won’t hear in Dena. Yes, they keep it real! The Foundation also supported my one-year Eaton Fire anniversary event at the Altadena Library in January, and Toni is a contributing writer to Our Beloved Altadena anthology.

But volunteering with Toni on Friday allowed me to get to know her differently. What started with removing vegetation turned into candid, unscripted moments and a chance to see another side of Dena through her eyes.

Toni drove me around Altadena, shared the backstory on several construction sites, and took me through her parents’ home, which broke ground on rebuilding on her dad’s birthday, May 30. She also showed me two pine trees she and her late brother planted 50 years ago and explained why she is still furious about three trees SCE cut down, including a 100-year-old oak.

It was the first fire-resistant home under construction that I had walked through, giving me an up-close look at the rebuilding process.

Watch the video to hear what Toni told me when I asked if she planned to write her name in the concrete.

Toni may not charge, but she gives a great tour. Very chatty and deeply passionate about Altadena’s recovery and rebuilding, she left me with plenty of questions, a lot to think about, and an even deeper appreciation for Dena.

One thing Toni said has especially stayed with me. She calls Altadena “the soul of the foothills.”

It’s one of the most beautiful descriptions of Dena I’ve heard. After spending the day seeing Altadena through Toni’s eyes, I understand even more why she feels that way. by @antoinetteiam

I went from the sweetest day in Dena to cleanup days in Dena.

On Friday and Saturday, I joined @antoinetteiam and @altadenatalks Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiative to trim overgrown vegetation and clear lots throughout the community. The volunteer-led effort provides free cleanup assistance to Eaton Fire survivors and residents who need support maintaining their properties.

It’s vital work. Overgrown weeds and brush can become fire hazards and attract coyotes, while displaced property owners may face citations if their lots aren’t maintained.

On Friday, I believe we worked on the 248th lot, near Fair Oaks and Altadena Drive, across the street from my relatives’ home that burned down in the Eaton Fire. Jim Nuccio provided refreshments and later gave us a tour of Nuccio’s Nursery.

I went home, sneezed about a hundred times, and blew my nose at least a dozen times! Lesson learned. On Saturday, I wore a mask and had no problems.

That day, about 100 volunteers from LA Works and LA28 met at Grocery Outlet before dispersing to more than a dozen locations throughout Dena. Other than the Altadena Talks staff, I didn’t recognize a single face. It was encouraging to see so many people show up for a community many may not call home.

I’m grateful to have spent some of my final days in California giving back to our beloved Dena.

In this video, filmed Friday, Toni talks about the importance of this work and the continued need for volunteers and donations. Technical issues kept me from posting it sooner. by @antoinetteiam

When God gives you a new sister in @kendramaysdesigns and she says "I'm going to get Mom and Dad home as quickly as I can", and moves mountains to make it happen, you go from ground breaking on 5.30.26 to foundation pour on 8.1.26. Framing is next up 🙌🏾
The Lord told me to embed a scripture in the four corners and our immediate family tree 🌳 in the center of the foundation. Joined by my son @s.raines and nephew @perspectivebydakota we did exactly that. #Gratefulness is flowing from my heart 💖🙌🏾 by @antoinetteiam
