Japan has developed innovative technology that generates electricity from people’s footsteps. This system uses special floor tiles called piezoelectric tiles, which produce small amounts of electricity when pressure is applied. When someone walks or steps on the tile, the pressure causes materials inside the tile to create an electric charge.

One well-known example was installed in busy train stations such as Shibuya Station in Tokyo. Thousands of commuters pass through these stations every day, and their footsteps press on the tiles. Each step produces a small amount of electricity, which can then be stored or used to power nearby devices like LED lights, electronic displays, or ticket gates.

The technology works through the piezoelectric effect, where certain materials generate electricity when they are compressed or bent. Sensors and generators inside the tiles capture this energy and convert it into electrical power. Although a single step only produces a tiny amount of electricity, the large number of people walking in crowded areas allows the system to generate a useful amount of energy.

This project is part of Japan’s effort to explore renewable and sustainable energy sources. By using energy that would normally be wasted, such as the force of footsteps, cities can reduce energy consumption and promote environmentally friendly technology. While this method cannot replace major power plants, it demonstrates how small energy sources can contribute to a greener and more efficient urban environment. by @antonalejandroaustria_67
