𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 is a members’ project that explores play as a compositional principle. The featured works examine different approaches to play in music, including the use of structure, process, chance, rules and constraints, improvisation, collaboration, and experimentation.

The program features works by 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐨, 𝐄𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚, 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐚𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨́𝐧, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞, and 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚.

Dear listener,

I tend to take time to fully process events as they happen. While some of my friends compose in real time, allowing the moment to unfold alongside the music, my process is more delayed. When working on this track, I wasn’t consciously responding to a specific experience or emotion. I was simply following intuition, without fully understanding what I was expressing.

It was only after the production was finished that the meaning of the piece became clear to me. Listening back, I realized the track had absorbed emotions and experiences I hadn’t yet processed at the time of writing. Rather than capturing a moment as it occurred, the music became a retrospective reflection, revealing its significance only after it was complete.

When we started the Ultrasoft Notes project, we imagined it as a fascinating opportunity to discover our friends’ musical tastes outside of function-based dance music contexts. Since the inaugural mixtape, we’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much these contributions allow us to connect with our guests on a deeper level — not through verbal narratives, but through intricate meditations expressed in sound.

Anton is someone we have held in high regard throughout the years of knowing him. He is a true genius — combining impeccable taste with an inspiring obsession for the art of digging. This edition of Notes reflects exactly what we’ve come to expect from him, and somehow still offers more. It is intelligent, carefully considered, and expansive in its content.

𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝓐𝓷𝓽𝓸𝓷:
I. Fundamental
Colocalization pertains to the method of checking whether two or more kinds of cells are co-located in a specific frame. Different colors are assigned to different cells and a software identifies which cells are co-located in the frame; however, this is not to say that these two types are interacting with one another as these could just be floating on top of each other at a microscopic scale. This fascinated me as it can be analogous to the abstractness of music. We don’t see music physically, yet as we listen, we feel as if the music is there.

II. Technical
What I did was I ‘colocalize’d all my past mix recordings to look for similarities. The result is this symbiosis of all the music I want to share, where it feels tangible to my surroundings. I sought after tracks that can colocalize through multiple seasons such as the sound of the warm summer and the cool of the monsoon rain. by @antonjusto42

Almost forgot!

As requested by a few friends (esp to the ones who were looking for the room) and to continue the streak of posting only once a year on a September, see the image above for the track-list of my set at the Slow Room from the previous Purveyr Fair, based on memory and a few videos (as you can see, no Skee Mask lol). I may have missed a track, pls let me know in the comments.

Extending my gratitude to @baby___ikea for the invite (exceptional programming wish I went on the 2nd Day), @andahalfph (Happy 12th!!), @paraluman.world , @transitrecords for creating a space for introverts. I saw the creative brief, and the concept I was aiming for my mix was the sound of flowers and warmth, specifically me describing the blooming motion of flowers (dubby techno) and the atmosphere of a warm garden (strings and waterfall piano). I had an original track-list in mind but I mostly panicked coz CDJs lol (one day i wont bring a kodigo !!!). Will save the rest of the other tracks for a different time and setting.

Dedicated to souls: Niño, Lolo Valentin, and my aunt who we’re celebrating their 12th death anniversary today

Hello! First IG post in a while. Please find the track-list to the Frequency Tropics (FT) Radio (in collaboration with Kent Chan and Seoul Community Radio for the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale) above + tidbits regarding each track. The link to the mix is in my bio. Endless gratitude to Rich, Kent, Sai, Sean, Paolo, Nash and MCR team +++ for the opportunity!

story:
Was battling the flu nearly a week prior to recording (never manifest becoming like Skee Mask iykyk). The decision-making for the tracks to play changed while succumbing the flu, after realizing how too much heat from the environment (esp in the tropics) could affect your body temperature. In a way, I interpreted sound/music as a sort of “equilibrium,” with its ability to provide warmth (figuratively) when you get the chills and further balancing your temperature with the environment (it’s the 0th Law of Thermo with the 3rd body being sound for u nerds out there). When we listen carefully, sounds from the tropics, be it from the environment or from your friends, get to traverse through our ears affecting the way we perceive and react.

The tracks I played are sort of the essential tracks I had in mind as I wasn’t able to download the shortlist of 200+ tracks I want to play in time. The mix is also a failed attempt at “non-linear DJ-ing/music curation” (try reversing the track-list and observe the vibe change) Hope you guys enjoy and check out the other mixes (Saved a handful from Pato and the way EDWVN brought a Hoody track from afro house is INSANE). Prepared with love! This also might be (for now) my last mix of the year. See you all in 2024!
