MY STRANGE TAKE — PURPLE

I’ve never really thought of purple as just a color.
It feels more like a status.

I started thinking about this while looking at Meiji nishiki-e those intensely colored woodblock prints that became such a huge part of Japan’s visual culture.

What fascinates me is what happened to purple.

As synthetic dyes entered Japan in the Meiji period, artists suddenly had access to purples that were deeper, brighter and much more saturated than the colors traditionally available. By the 1870s, methyl violet was creating these almost unnaturally intense shades.

And in nishiki-e, purple doesn’t feel passive.

It appears on the robes of actors and beautiful women, surrounded by red, green and gold. It makes the figure feel instantly more elaborate, more desirable, somehow more important.

Which makes me think about purple differently.

For centuries, purple has been attached to emperors, royalty and wealth. But in Meiji Japan, nishiki-e turned that history into something you could actually see.

Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to it.

Purple doesn’t feel like a color to me.
It feels like wealth, power and desire translated into pigment.
