“Morning bluebird. What else would have been said?”
In the next reincarnation, I think I’ll teach you.
It was serene, a kind of domestic bliss, you know?

This self-portrait draws from a moment I had with a painting of Tilda Swinton at the National Portrait Gallery Scotland here in Edinburgh. Her posture, her poise, it stayed with me. What would Tilda Swinton have done? She’d remain hidden, lowkey, outside the public eye. So I brought that silent drama into my own world.

A dreamy, soft edit inspired by the surreal nostalgia of @dazed x @dior Men’s Summer 2024. With metallic elements (a little Dali), pastel yellow and violet for visual friction and a crimson heart stitched in for personal myth. Theatrical, tender and a bit cunty.

ROYAL ROGUE ரோயல் ரோக் रॉयल रोग - “அன்பே சிவம்” [love is god] 🪷

My POV: In a city where I’ve rarely seen brown creative representation, this was my beginning. To be adorned by my true and fluid cultural roots and be unapologetic, this was inside the National Portrait Gallery of Edinburgh, a space steeped in colonial memory. This was no accident, it was a statement. If the walls carried the paintings and stories of their history, I wanted my body to stand among them as a maximal living canvas, refusing absence from the true history of my culture.

Every element became more than styling, the peacock feather for Krishna’s play, the flute made silence more visible, the customized Louis Vuitton bag reclaiming craft, the saree as a fluid form beyond binary, the mango for sweetness and fertility, the umbrella, the jewels, the brooches, all of them fragments of divinity and rebellion stitched together.

At first, I was conscious of my skin, of my body exposed to a public gaze but slowly that vulnerability transformed until I was no longer performing but embodying. Between the gaze and the self, between tradition and resistance, I dissolved into symbol.

There are seasons even when the light feels tired and the only thing remaining is the warm golden glow when you go to sleep, not the full smoke but only the colour of the smoke. Not when the fox keeps entering the room, but when the fox stops entering the room at the same time as you. Some things are honestly just weather. Like I can talk to my water and the ice can crystallise into shapes I desire, into the words I might become, into dreams where I can feel myself floating through air again. And all life asks for is enough wonder for it to grow into a room larger than the one it was in before.

It is strange how a mask can sometimes feel more real than the weight of a thousand empty wine bottles I have been carrying. “I thought we were in this boat together.”

My sweet Moroccan scent and the earthy warmth of Persian food have somehow kept me steady. Everything in life is writable about but we are always distorting it somehow, making it grander than it was or smaller than it felt.

You tend to the world and the world tends to you. You whisper to trees, and after a while, you begin to hear them whisper back. Reciprocity has been very kind that way, through food and through trees.

I never quite know which version of myself will wake up in the morning. It changes every time so I collect calm before it disappears. It takes a lot of effort to remain this soft, this still while my mind refuses to switch itself off.

So for now, in this moment I have briefly returned to myself again.

Opening up to other artists have never let me down because we are all quite well equipped with turning pain into magic and retelling our stories. “If you keep facing the sun, the shadow will always stay behind you.”

We meet things around us only till the depth it has learned to carry. A waterfall can only fall as far as the land allows it to, flowers finding their ways through cracked tiles,l or things only with the language they have known well enough to speak. Perhaps we are all responding from the deepest places we have managed to reach so far.

There is also a complexity of multicultural experiences that I have been feeling lately. I wish I could translate it exactly as it has been living inside me but are identities are not just a home but usually a river we need to cross. And the more closely I look at things, the more they seem to look back at me.

As I have been reflecting on July so far and allowing myself to dive into my creative flow, I have taken various different forms of expressions, through different mediums to approach this month, may it be through finding joy in the boats swimming away in a vast ocean that look tiny from afar.

Worrying is the worst way I could use my imagination so my mind has translated them into adventure packed movies when I close my eyes. I have had dreams of singing with Lana, riding a cute dragon pet in the vast pink pink sky and other surreal realms that feel like a temporary home during retrogrades.

I had long paused the idea and concept of “myself” that I recently resumed through giving myself personal projects and introspective reflections when I have attained a bit of self fulfilment through my art. ‘Reader trajectory collapses at 21” and just then gets to the genre of self help. I have long loved the journals of Sylvia Plath who’s the mother to inspire the mother.
I have written letters and postcards, waiting for them to be delivered at the right times.

I have been very kind to myself to add a deeper sense of meaning to my day and to ask myself “what do I need in this moment?”

I have had tons of failures but I have also learned some methods that work in specific situations. I shall be doing more art, excited to see what this journey brings out of me.
