i came across a study on the optimum conditions for the delignification of bamboo. it revealed that when a bamboo chip is placed in a chemical bath at 170°C the bamboo is “vulnerable” enough to be modified into paper but at just 180°C, it degrades into residue.

this made me realize that similar to the bamboo chip, our highest state of vulnerability is just a 10 degree threshold away from total burnout. by being vulnerable enough we too can be modified into anything we aspire to be.

inspired by this, i created the KAPPA DISPLAY font by digitally delignifying the letter “A”. it mirrors the scientific and emotional collapse revealing the parallels between art, science and human emotions.

a media representation of how the solar (pingala), lunar (ida) and central (sushumna) nadis get activated during the alarippu which literally translates to blossoming.

i learnt that this system is actually why the alarippu is often perceived as an invocatory piece - it activates the mind & body of dancers and helps them warm up for the rest of the margam.
