i didn’t know that i was Black until i was about 6 years old. i could not understand what that meant. i would ask my mom why people would point that out about me. she told me that my skin is a beautiful shade of brown, but i was jealous of hers and wanted to be lighter. even though i was young, i remember this day. i remember this as we were by a chick-fil-a near my house and she sighed realizing she “forgot to tell me”. it may sound silly but that just wasn’t really a big deal or a thing for her growing up in barbados. beyond this, i would always resist. when people asked to share my crayons while we were coloring and wanted “skin color” (the peach crayon) i would go ahead and hand them brown. that’s my skin color. even so young, i knew that there’s more than one shade and each is beautiful. i remember being bullied because of the color of my skin like it was yesterday. something that i am not able to change, and a little girl called me “disgusting and ugly” every day and told me she hated me. i cried to my mom begging her to do something. she told me it would run its course. i hated that answer. in spaces where only i was different, i have come to realize that you can feel beautiful in your skin, and that Black is beautiful. this is what equality means to me🫶🏾 by @anyapilgrim

i am stingy with my compliments but i am taking a moment to just tell the world about my best friend. i have never met someone so resilient and so inspiring. watching you at championships made me want to get back out there (knowing my bars are fully wide and i don’t train for it😀) but your comeback story has been nothing short of INCREDIBLE. some days are hard and things aren’t always perfect but it doesn’t take away from your talent. i have so many of those days too when i don’t feel like i’m good enough or the whole world is judging me. but the truth is, for us and every other gymnast, we are doing this for ourselves and the love of the sport ❤️‍🔥‼️keep going and do it for you 💗and syrus🐾and the melanin crown 👑 by @anyapilgrim
