If you’ve been posting consistently, trying different types of content and exploring ways to make money as a creator, but you still feel like you’re getting nowhere, it might be time to stop doing more and start figuring out what’s missing.

Your content, audience, monetisation strategy, ownership and the opportunities you’re creating all play a part in building a sustainable creator career.

But if one of those foundations is missing, it can hold everything else back.

Take a few minutes to score yourself honestly out of 10 for each area. Your lowest score is a good place to start, because you don’t need to work on everything at once. You need to identify what will make the biggest difference to your next step.

This is what building a creator business is really about. Not just posting more, chasing views or hoping a brand deal lands in your inbox, but understanding what you’re building and how all the pieces fit together.

Follow for practical creator tips and advice to help you turn your content into something bigger.

There’s more to building a creator business than creating content.

You can spend hours planning, filming and editing, but if you’re not thinking about the business behind it, you’re making things harder for yourself than they need to be.

The goal isn’t just to create content. It’s to build something that can generate income, create opportunities and give you more control over your future.

And that means putting the right systems in place from the beginning, so you’re not trying to figure everything out as you go.

Stick with me on this one, because the last slides are for you 🤍 The girl who’s holding herself back because she doesn’t feel confident enough to be seen, put herself out there or go after the things she really wants.

For most of my life, I let my weight dictate what I did, the opportunities I went after and how much of myself I was willing to put out into the world.

I spent years believing that once I was thinner, I’d finally feel confident enough to live the life I wanted. But there was always another goalpost, another reason I wasn’t quite ready yet.

And it breaks my heart to think about how much of my life I put on hold because I didn’t feel good enough in my own body.

If you’re a woman in the UK who relates to this, I want you to know that you don’t have to wait until you look a certain way to start living your life. You don’t have to earn the right to be seen, take up space or go after the things you want.

You deserve to experience your life now, not just in some imagined future version of yourself.

Please don’t spend another year holding yourself back. You deserve so much more than that 🤍🤍

Getting brand deals isn’t just about finding brands to pitch.

It’s about making sure that when a brand does find you, there’s a reason for them to want to work with you.

That’s why I don’t think brand deals should be the first thing you focus on when you’re trying to build a career as a creator. You need the foundations in place first: what you create, who you are, what you want to build and how you want to show up online.

Then you can start thinking about how to turn that into opportunities and build relationships with brands that actually make sense for you.

My second community coaching project starts on 9th November and we’ll be going deep into brand deals, including how to position yourself, create content brands want to work with, pitch strategically and turn campaigns into longer-term opportunities.

But first, we’re laying the foundations.

I hate to say it but you’re being given bad advice…

Building a career as a content creator isn’t about showing up online, growing an audience and seeing what opportunities come your way anymore.

You have to build with intention! Because if you wait for an audience to decide what they want from you and figure out how you’re going to monetise that you can then…

You end up relying on brand deals, platform algorithms and opportunities you have no control over to make money.

Or worse…

You build a following around something that doesn’t actually align with the career, income or lifestyle you want and at some point end up having to start again

Start with the vision, what do you want your life to look like? What skills do you have that you can monetise? How much money do you need to make for your vision to come to life? Who do you need to target to build a community aligned with your goals? How can you create content that sells to your target audience?

THEN create, show up for yourself daily and build not only an audience but an engaged community that are aligned with you and the life you want to build!

And if you don’t know what that vision looks like yet comment BECOMING and I’ll help you figure that out because that’s exactly what we’re doing in my community right now, building with intention ✨ by @anythingbutregular

14 years in influencer & creator marketing, 10 years running my own business 👩🏽‍💻 Here’s what the industry taught me and the lessons I learned about self employment along the way…

So if you’re thinking of starting a career online read the captions too and I’ll explain how this can apply to you 🤳

I don’t regret taking the opportunity, it was perfect timing to go all in on an idea I had but always think about the long term goal and what you’re trying to build. Here’s why…

Brand deals are great, who wouldn’t love the opportunity to get paid for working with your favourite brands! But the reality of it is, it’s extremely inconsistent and even the creators who are at their peak right now and you’re seeing them working with tons of brands, will always see a decline in those later down the line. Don’t rely on brand deals for income 💄

You’re always replaceable, no matter how much value you can provide to someone 👯‍♀️

I left the 9-5 to create a 7-12! If you’re not careful about what routes you’re taking to monetise, you can end up building a life that’s more draining than the one you’re trying to escape from. 💻😭

Get clued up on your finances! I took bad advice from an accountant I trusted to show me how to run a business and I’m still paying the price for it today. Too many creators forget about the reality of running a business because it is exactly that, a business 💰

Gifting is nice but it doesn’t pay the bills. Again get clued up on your budget, what do you need to earn to cover your bills? How many brand deals, clients or hours does that mean you need to work to cover them and…get paid your ideal income! Don’t just think “influencers make millions” get clued up on how they make that happen 📈

You can never scale by selling your time and if you sell your time to one person and they drop you, your entire business crumbles in an instant. I spent almost 4 years freelancing supporting someone else in building their business, now they travel the world have a 100million company and staff that do the work for them! The same goes when you’re at your peak booked and busy with brands sending your community to buy their products, don’t forget to send them to som taken in Manchester, United Kingdom by @anythingbutregular

Your follower count is one of the least interesting things about your audience.

What matters more is whether the people following you are actually paying attention to what you create.

Because if you’re trying to build a career from content, your audience is an asset. And the more you understand about who they are, what they care about and how they behave, the more useful that information becomes when you’re pitching yourself to brands.

So stop treating your analytics like a report card and start using them as information.

Look at what gets people watching, saving, sharing, clicking and taking action. That tells you far more about the value of your audience than a follower number sitting at the top of your profile.

And this is also why I don’t think your creator career should be built around chasing followers. A smaller, engaged audience can be far more valuable than a huge audience that doesn’t actually do anything.

Save this because you’ll need it when you start creating content for brands 💸

Knowing how to film the content is one thing. Knowing how to actually package it up and send it over is another.

I’ve spent 14 years working behind the scenes with brands, agencies and talent, so I’ve seen plenty of content come through. This is how I’d want a creator to send me their content if I was on the receiving end.

From editing and captions to exporting the right file and getting it over to the brand, here’s the full process.

I think we’ve made the word “influencer” mean one very specific type of person.

Someone with a huge following, posting their outfits, holidays, skincare and brand deals.

But influence has never been limited to that.

If your content makes someone think differently, feel something, discover something, try something or buy something, you’re influencing them.

And that’s why I think the creator economy is so much bigger than people realise.

You don’t have to want the stereotypical influencer career. You can be a writer, artist, business owner, parent, builder, baker or literally anything else and use content to build an audience, create opportunities and get people invested in what you’re doing.

That’s what I love about being a creator. There isn’t one version of what it has to look like.

You can use content as the starting point and build something that actually fits your skills, interests, goals and the life you want.

That’s exactly what I’m building inside my community too. A space for people who want to use content to create something of their own, whatever that looks like for them.

If you’ve ever thought “I want to be a content creator, but I don’t want to be an influencer”, comment BECOMING and I’ll send you the link. by @anythingbutregular

If you want to get more engagement on your posts stop sleeping on this 👇🏽

If you’re putting time into creating content, don’t waste one of the easiest opportunities you have to give people more.

Your video might stop the scroll, but your caption can make someone stay. It can give the context you couldn’t fit into the video, add another perspective, answer the question someone might have, tell a story, share something useful or simply give people another reason to connect with you.

And if you’re trying to grow as a content creator, captions are also part of how you make your content easier to discover. Think about the words your ideal audience would actually search for and use them naturally rather than stuffing your caption with random keywords.

Most importantly, write for the person who has actually taken the time to open it.

Because if someone has watched your video AND read your caption, they’re already giving you more of their attention. Give them something worth sticking around for.
