WEST END:
Inspired by his childhood memories of Ibiza’s West End in the 1970s and 80s, on a corner of the island inhabited by working families emigrated from Andalusia, hippies from around the world, and tourists looking to party, José Morella reconstructs the difficult life of his grandfather, Nicomedes, who suffered from mental illness. Morella delves into his family’s history and the combination of fear, lack of understanding, and shame that led them to build a wall of isolation around his grandfather.

With a heterogeneous mix of genres, from his own family stories and autofiction to essay, Morella offers an energetic and electrifying lesson in humanity and compassion. Drawing on testimony, personal experience, nods and references from throughout the cultural spectrum, this book is an unforgettable read.

Over the moon to be translating @marzo_de_abril's incredible debut novella, SI LAS COSAS FUESEN COMO SON for @pressheloise (publication in 2027). [English title TBD]

🔥This book is a poetic gut punch from a promising young Uruguayan author.

After a breakup, the narrator is obliged to move back in with her overbearing mother. Surrounded by guava and grapefruit trees, the waves lapping in the background, her separation from Julia seems somehow more bearable. However, the tense relationship with her bulldozer of a mother and her apathetic brothers soon turns the space into a tragicomic purgatory filled with silences, creaks and macabre lyricism.

In the literary tradition of terrible mothers, Gabriela Escobar Dobrzalovski creates the unforgettable character of La Tumbona, the ‘Dozer’: the voracious, all-consuming mother who topples, crushes and tramples everything in her path as she roams the house, her tiny kingdom.

What a balmy-cicada-nights-type summer stay I've had so far at @translationhouselooren ☀️

Came here for 10 days to work on my third draft of IF THINGS WERE AS THEY ARE by @marzo_de_abril ✍🏼

Having the time and space to really luxuriate in the translation of a text in a place as special as this, sharing meals and conversation with lovely translators of all different languages, is a real privilege.
