Today I went out with friends who are often described as a Black, a Coloured, an Indian and a White person.

Living abroad has made me realise how quickly we reduce each other to those labels back home. In Beijing, we were never introduced that way — we were just colleagues, gym partners, house guests, braai buddies… people trying to figure life out far from home.

That’s not to say race or racism doesn’t exist there — it absolutely does, and I’ve noticed it in different ways. But among many of us living abroad, friendship often formed before any label did.

Being back in SA, I’ve noticed how naturally race becomes the first way we describe one another again. It’s been an interesting reminder of how context shapes what we see first.

Our differences are real and they matter — but so does the fact that friendship, care and belonging can exist before any label does.

Chinese New Year is such a meaningful time here — a celebration of new beginnings, family, and hope for the year ahead. 🧧

Inside this red envelope, you write your wish and place it on the wall. It’s symbolic. It’s intentional. It’s personal.

I’m proudly South African 🇿🇦, but living in China has allowed me to experience and respect such a beautiful tradition.
